Position Overview:

The Manager, People contributes to the achievement of Semex’s mission, vision and strategic objectives by ensuring smooth operation and delivery of all aspects of the Human Resources function and fostering an engaging and collaborative workplace culture. Reporting to the Vice President of People, the Manager will lead the human resources team in providing recruitment, employee relations, performance management, health & safety, compensation and benefits support to the organization. This role also manages payroll staff and oversees payroll policies and processes as well as HRIS strategies and KPI reporting. The incumbent will have primary responsibility for making recommendations on and implementing compensation, benefits and health and safety programming for the organization.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Coaches and develops Talent Management team, including payroll staff
  • Oversees monthly and annual payroll reconciliation and reporting processes
  • Leads global employee engagement strategy and execution, inclusive of annual employee engagement survey
  • Oversees strategic recruitment programming and delivery for corporate and operational divisions
  • Manages and provides guidance on escalated employee relations matters
  • Liaises with external counsel to positively resolve legal matters
  • Develops and implements health and safety programs and policies
  • Leads performance management, bonus and merit programs; owns the annual planning, communication and delivery
  • Partners with senior leaders and marketing on Semex’s Employee Value Proposition (EVP) including implementation and ongoing EVP management to support employee attraction and retention strategies.
  • Oversees HR KPI establishment and reporting
  • Ensures accurate and equitable application of Semex’s compensation program and makes recommendations for compensation program changes
  • Reviews and responds to ad hoc headcount and wage adjustment requests
  • Leads job evaluation process and manages job description library for the organization
  • Supports annual headcount budgeting process
  • Participates in annual benefit plan review and makes recommendations on benefit plan structure
  • Participates in the CAP governance process as a committee member for the pension plan
  • Coaches TM team on disability case management and manages the relationship with third party disability case management vendor
  • Plays an active role in the succession planning program for Semex
  • Develops and maintains organizational policies and procedures that ensure legislative compliance
  • Supports a positive workplace culture through the identification, implementation and ongoing management of recognition and wellness tools
  • Crafts and delivers internal communications related to programs, policies and initiatives
  • Supports immigration requirements by obtaining travel and immigration visas as required
  • Oversees grant applications and approvals
  • Provides leadership and guidance on investigations
  • Monitors Talent Management budget and provides approvals for TM related expenses
  • Supports Vice President, People on projects and initiatives as required
Qualifications:
  • Bilingual (English and French) strongly preferred
  • Hybrid work environment requiring a minimum of 3 days per week in office
  • Travel within Ontario and Quebec required – approximately 15-20%
  • Valid G-class license required
  • Proven experience coaching and consulting with leaders at all levels of the organization to align people strategies with business priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability in leadership coaching and development
  • Direct experience in all aspects of the employee life cycle, including recruitment, onboarding, performance management and employee departures
  • Strong understanding of payroll processes and systems
  • Proactive understanding of Canadian legislative requirements and best practices
  • Comfort in creating and maintaining company policies and procedures
  • Proven ability to navigate and manage complex employee relations matters
  • Strong understanding of data management and HRIS platform technologies
  • Knowledgeable in compensation structures and programming, including sales compensation
  • Previous management of benefit plan design and program management, including annual plan renewals and pension plan administration
  • Experience implementing and managing health and safety programming, including accident/incident prevention programming and WSIB/CNESST claims management
  • Previous experience leading employee engagement surveys and leading strategic follow up measures
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build collaborative relationships at all levels of the organization
  • Exhibits a sense of diplomacy through problem identification, problem solving and people management
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire teams and the ability to advocate for and influence positive change
  • Ability to deliver results on strategic objectives through effective planning, delivery and problem solving
  • Knowledgeable and enthusiastic in rewards and recognition programs
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality and accountability
  • Ability to respond to high pressure situations in a calm and steady manner
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office and HRIS systems; prior experience with ADP an asset
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Human Resources or a related field, or equivalent combination of education, professional certification and work experience.
  • CHRP or CHRL designation preferred
  • Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible HR roles, including 3 years supervisory experience
