The Opportunity

This position is field-based and works with the Abbott Diabetes Care Division. We’re focused on helping people with diabetes manage their health with life-changing products that provide accurate data to drive better-informed decisions. We’re revolutionizing the way people monitor their glucose levels with our new sensing technology.

What You’ll Do

Drive proactive engagement and advocacy efforts to advance the company’s strategic goals by:

  1. Developing and maintaining strategic relations with key external stakeholders and decision makers from Ministries across government, health technology assessment (HTA) bodies, healthcare professionals (HCPs), key opinion leaders (KOLs), patients/patient association groups (PAGs) (e.g., Breakthrough T1D and Diabetes Canada), and industry leaders to demonstrate Abbott as a leader in the industry and a trusted partner.
  2. Monitoring political, economic, and social factors affecting public policy that could impact the organization. Provide insights and collaborate with internal teams to develop and advocate for company positions.
  3. Developing and implementing strategies and tactics to support all aspects of government relations in Western Canada. Lead the development and implementation of integrated strategies and manage resources such as external agencies and budgets.
  4. Acting as the organization’s primary liaison with government bodies, policy makers, HTA organizations, and patient association groups. Ensure regular, proactive communication to align external activities with organization’s objectives.
  5. Developing unique strategies to support the introduction of innovative products to the market, working closely with access and commercial teams to align messaging and create value across the system.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field such as Public Policy, HTA, Clinical Epidemiology, Health Economics, Political Science, Communications, Business Administration or Healthcare Management.
  2. Master’s Degree or PhD (preferred) in a relevant field.
  3. Additional Certifications (optional but beneficial) in stakeholder management, public affairs, or government relations.
  4. Minimum 5 to 8 years of experience in stakeholder relations, government relations, public affairs, or external affairs within the healthcare, medical device, or pharmaceutical industry.
  5. Strong understanding of public policy, HTA, and regulatory environments.
  6. Strategic relationship-building experience with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  7. Ability to work under pressure and act with urgency.
  8. Strong communication and presentation skills.
  9. Project management and resource oversight experience.
  10. Healthcare industry knowledge at a national or provincial level.
  11. Proven proactive work ethic.
  12. PC literate including Word, PowerPoint, Excel skills.
  13. Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (10%+).
  14. Proven leadership skills.
