Practice Review provides protection of the public by assessing the compliance of firms with professional and ethical standards, taking appropriate follow-up or remedial action in instances of non-compliance, and by providing an educational experience to firms. All professional accounting firms and professional service providers (PSPs) in Alberta are subject to practice review at least every 3 years.
This position is responsible for conducting practice reviews, conducting consistency reviews of completed practice reviews, and for the coordination and administration of the practice review program. The Manager is also responsible for providing technology support within Practice Review’s internal systems and databases.
This position reports to the Associate Director, Practice Review.
CPA Alberta has offices in Edmonton and Calgary and provides hybrid Telecommuting opportunities (working from home a maximum of 3 days a week).

What you bring
- CPA designation with a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and 6 years of progressive monitoring standards experience, with at least 3 of those years in a management role
- The following number of hours, accumulated over any three of the last five years, either directly or through persons under your supervision:
- a total of 425 compilation engagement hours of experience (compilation as defined in the CPA Act)
- hours spent on audit or review engagements of historical financial information as defined in the Act may be accepted in place of hours spent on compilation engagements
- Strong working knowledge of the CPA Canada Handbooks
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to demonstrate technical knowledge and application in a practical manner
- Exceptional organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and ability to multi-task
- High degree of professional ethics and integrity
- Ability to deal with difficult situations and individuals with tact and diplomacy
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams)
What you will be doing
- Using the methodology and reporting approved by the Practice Review Committee, conduct practice reviews and make recommendations to the Practice Review Committee regarding firms’ compliance with professional and ethical standards.
- Review and assess the work of contract practice reviewers for technical accuracy and evaluation consistency for practice reviews.
- Communicate educational information including best practice and upcoming technical standards to assist members.
- Manage the overall administration of the practice review process, ensuring that each professional accounting firm/PSP is visited at least once every 3 years.
- Follow up with firms/PSP on non-compliance to ensure follow through of remedial actions and escalate to the Associate Director when required.
- Assist the Secretariat with enhancements, testing, and troubleshooting within the Practice Review System (PRS) and member database (CAMMS).
- Provide supervision and coaching to two direct reports; giving regular coaching, feedback, and recognition and actively participating in the regular performance review process.
