Job description

The Occupational Health and Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the OHS Program across all Det’on Cho-owned enterprises. This includes providing technical support, ensuring compliance with regulations, overseeing training, and promoting a safety culture. The manager's role is to create a safe work environment and minimize hazards to protect employees from occupational risks.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  1. Develop and execute effective, relevant procedures to enhance the program, review the OHS Program annually and identify Policies and Procedures needing revision or development.
  2. Solicit input for changes to policies and procedures at all levels of the organization.
  3. Communicate and implement changes in collaboration with Senior Management.
  4. Monitor compliance with policies and procedures and provide feedback to Senior Management.
  5. Evaluate health and safety practices and procedures for risk assessment and compliance with legal guidelines.
  6. Ensure that the location completes monthly inspections.
  7. Participate in each location's inspections annually or as hazard identification training and ensure consistent data collection.
  8. Provide Monthly Analysis for Inspection with managers and supervisors to conduct investigations to find causes and take preventive measures for further recommendations for preventing or eliminating risks/hazards.
  9. Identify trends in incidents and communicate with the Senior OHS Manager; be the point of contact with WSCC for all accidents and injuries.
  10. Manage the Return-to-Work Program—ensure that employees who have taken leave due to illness or injury return and integrate successfully into the support to managers and employees regarding WSCC.
  11. Ensure WSCC claims are captured in the incident management database and provide support to management and employees as gaps arise; recommend OHS training.
  12. Develop the organization's annual training needs to ensure compliance with legislation and company standards for new hire orientation, outlining the Company's high expectations regarding safety rules and training.
  13. Maintain records, submit reports, and stay up to date on relevant legislation.
  14. Translate business strategies to comply with legislation.
  15. Represent the organization and act as the point person for communication with regulatory bodies and interact with provincial and federal agencies requiring deliverable reporting, including WSCC and Emergency.
  16. Stay informed about changes in safety regulations and standards applicable to the organization.
  17. Apply expertise to assess risk and solve problems of varying tasks.
  18. Review and lead risk assessments for new projects and enforce preventative measures.
  19. Support senior management on various safety issues that impact the wider industry group.
  20. Participate in project start-up meetings and understand the scope of work on projects.
  21. Provide reports to Management/Senior Management/Human Resources on OH&S issues.
  22. Assist in meeting obligations under the relevant Occupational Health & Safety legislation, such as ongoing safety education, hazard identification, and elimination.
  23. Provide direct OHS coaching to the site JOSH committees, management, and employees.
  24. Manage the Site Docs System and ensure completion of corrective actions that are raised.
  25. Link the corrective action accident investigation and root cause analysis process so managers can review accident data and trends.
  26. Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure project safety performance.
  27. Conduct regular assessments and audits to evaluate adherence to safety standards and identify areas for improvement.
  28. Provide timely and accurate safety reports to project management and senior leadership.
  29. Recommend changes based on leading indicators and statistical metrics.
  30. Mentor, train, and support the career development of junior to senior staff involved in OHS.
  31. Perform other related duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU BRING

  1. Education in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or related fields. Years of experience will be considered in lieu.
  2. Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in safety management.
  3. Demonstrated ability to manage all aspects of an OHS program on projects of increasing complexity.
  4. Relevant professional certifications or memberships (e.g., CRSP, CRST) are advantageous.
  5. Thorough comprehension of Federal, Provincial, and local regulations regarding Occupational Health and Safety.
  6. Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  7. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  8. Ability to freely access all points of a work site in wide-ranging climates and environments.
  9. Able to successfully communicate with all levels of the organization.
  10. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  11. Good attention to detail, with the ability to recognize discrepancies.
  12. Strong work ethic - Willing to do what it takes to get the job done.
  13. Willingness to travel and relocate to project sites as needed.
