Our Breeding and Genetics program was established to provide the science, technical innovations and services that underpin the Aurora’s global cannabis production. We use modern plant breeding approaches to develop next generation cannabis varieties and genetics research to understand how this plant functions at a molecular level. Our research efforts allow Aurora to achieve more economical production, through higher yields, reduce pressure from disease and reduce inputs, and to produce higher value cannabis products that meet patient and consumer needs. Our plant science and breeding activities are focused at our Coast facility in Comox, British Columbia. This dedicated research facility includes over 10,000 square feet of laboratory/research space and a 22,500 square foot purpose designed greenhouse.


Job summary
We’re searching for a dynamic professional to plant their roots with us as a Maintenance Manager. In this role, you will be support our R&D facility by ensuring our infrastructure is operating and maintained to meet the needs of a high-tech, automated, environmentally controlled growing facility.



As the Maintenance Manager you will focus on…


Reporting to the Director, Operations; the Maintenance Manager will be located at Comox, BC, at our Coast facility. This individual will oversee the identification and prioritization of site-level engineering projects, manage the maintenance program, and lead capital investment planning. The successful candidate will possess strong leadership skills, technical expertise, and the ability to drive results in a fast-paced environment. The Facility Manager will work as part of a small multidisciplinary team including mechanical, electrical, and building infrastructure specialists. The candidate must have a solid understanding of building and greenhouse services, contractor, and project management. As a small site, this is a hands-on position with some of the day-to-day routines surrounding fire systems, pest control, grounds and preventative maintenance that may require your support.


MAIN RESPONSIBILITES:

Maintenance Management:

  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to minimize downtime and ensure optimal equipment performance.
  • Establish maintenance schedules, protocols, and procedures to maintain compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate with production teams to prioritize maintenance activities and minimize disruptions to operations.
  • Monitor equipment performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement corrective actions as needed.

Capital Investment Planning:

  • Develop and maintain a strategic capital investment plan to support the long-term growth and sustainability of the organization.
  • Evaluate capital expenditure proposals, conduct cost-benefit analyses, and make recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with finance and procurement teams to secure funding, procure equipment and consumables, manage on-site trades and vendor relationships.

Team Leadership and Development:

  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to the facility team.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and accountability within the department.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, set performance goals, and provide ongoing feedback and coaching to team members.
  • Identify training and development opportunities to enhance the technical skills and capabilities of the team.

Compliance and Regulatory Oversight:

  • Ensure that all maintenance and engineering activities comply with relevant regulatory requirements, industry standards, and company policies.
  • Stay informed about changes in regulations and standards pertaining to facility operations, equipment safety, and environmental compliance.
  • Collaborate with regulatory affairs and compliance teams to address any compliance issues or audit findings.

Asset Management and Lifecycle Planning:

  • Develop and implement asset management strategies to optimize the lifecycle of equipment and infrastructure.
  • Conduct regular assessments of asset condition, performance, and depreciation to inform maintenance and replacement decisions.
  • Develop long-term asset replacement plans and budget forecasts to ensure the continued reliability and efficiency of critical assets.

Data Analysis and Performance Metrics:

  • Utilize data analytics tools and performance metrics to monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to maintenance, engineering, and facility operations.
  • Analyze trends, identify areas for improvement, and develop action plans to optimize equipment reliability, uptime, and productivity.
  • Prepare regular reports and presentations for senior management to communicate performance trends, project milestones, and strategic recommendations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in maintenance and engineering roles, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing maintenance programs, executing engineering projects, and leading capital investment initiatives.
  • Strong project management skills with experience in project planning, budgeting, and risk management.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements, safety standards, and best practices in maintenance and engineering.
  • Experience working in the cannabis industry or other highly regulated industries is a plus.
  • Additional Requirements:
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and respond to after-hours emergencies as required.
