What you’ll be doing

The role is responsible for contributing to the development and implementation of Investment strategies for CIBC Trust clients as well as ensuring the detailed execution of investment decisions for moderately complex client portfolios. This would include direct responsibility for the management of a block of client investment portfolios, establishing a portfolio strategy, providing advice and making customized investment decisions, performing investment administration and providing client relationship management thereon. The position also includes providing input on department investment research and portfolio strategy, conducting oversight of internal and external investment managers, operating the trading desk, preparing regular department reports, backing up other team members, ensuring the day to day operations of the department providing and performing other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director, Investment Management.

How you’ll succeed

  • Investment Portfolio Construction, Management and Administration - On a “Prudent Investor” basis, you will manage fully discretionary or advisory investment portfolios for simple to moderately complex Estate, Trust, and Agency clients. You will provide investment advice and service to staff and their clients in dealing with and discussing Investment Issues and matters, ensuring you gather, document and review KYC and investment information in establishing investment roles and responsibilities. You will be responsible for performing investment risk reviews on individual client portfolios by conducting investment research and analysis on incoming assets and providing recommendations and solutions and establishing customized client portfolio investment strategies, including transition planning and implementation that meet client investment objectives, tolerances, preferences and constraints.
  • Investment Management Oversight - Perform investment oversight on other internal and external Investment Managers in fulfilling CIBC Trust’s fiduciary obligations for investments that are not managed directly by the CIBC Trust Investment Team. You will perform your due diligence and oversee moderately complicated oversight situations to ensure that CIBC Trust’s role and responsibilities around investment management are discharged and its interests are protected, by reviewing Investment policies and evaluating investment strategies of external managers. You will educate/train and directly oversee Investment Managers, Trust personnel and stakeholders on CIBC Trust processes and address and resolve conflicts in a reasonable and timely manner.
  • Internal and External Client Relationship Management - You will develop and manage value-added relationships with internal and external clients by preparing investment proposals, recommendations and client correspondence in a professional manner for routine and simple non-routine situations. You will deliver client relationship management services for the assigned portfolio by managing staff, client and stakeholder expectations and perceptions, while following the standard for ensuring that client investment objectives, constraints, risk tolerances and preferences are understood, documented and followed.
  • Investment Management Operations - To support the smooth operations of the Investment Management department within CIBC Trust, you will perform other Investment and Administrative functions as required, including but not limited to: Manage the trading desk operations and broker network to ensure CIBC Trust’s trading capability and availability at all times; Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, firm policies and accuracy of trading activities; Support Management Investment Committee meetings, including preparation of minutes and various reports thereon; Assist in the development, enhancement and implementation of department policies, procedures, workflows, letters, forms, reports and templates and Assist the Executive Director, Investment Management and other senior team members on various special projects, initiatives and activities as they arise from time to time.
  • Investment Research - You will remain current with the financial and economic news of the day in order to make professional informed and prudent investment decisions and recommendations for assigned portfolios. You will also be responsible to monitor and keep up to date with current events, overall economic and financial environment, trends and investment products and conduct investment research to formulate and communicate opinions on the market in general as well as assigned market sectors.

Who You Are

  • You have a degree in Business/Commerce/Finance/Economics. Completion of CFA – Level 1 or full Canadian Investment Management (CIM) designation is required.
  • You have demonstrated experience with 5+ years of relevant investment management experience (RIME), knowledge of personal financial planning, Canadian Tax, Estates and Trusts and Investment Accounting. You have strong analytical and investment research skills, working knowledge of industry software, including Thompson One and Bloomberg. You are results-oriented, confident and assertive; Very well organized, detailed and methodical with the ability to prioritize and multi-task while meeting required strict deadlines. Basic French language capability would be an asset. Proficient in MS Office products – Outlook, Word, Teams and Power Point. Strong MS Excel skills.
