The Glenn Carpenter Centre is located within Saint John on 220 acres of outdoor space with a lake, hiking trail, lodge, picnic shelters and the new 8000 square foot Crabtree Hall. The goal of the Glenn Carpenter Centre is to empower youth through outdoor education, recreation and leadership opportunities while providing health, fitness and recreation programs for all ages.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Manager, Glenn Carpenter Centre is a full-time leadership position with the YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick reporting to the General Manager of Health, Membership & Recreation. They will provide leadership to the Glenn Carpenter Centre in a strategic and efficient manner. Through the Y’s mission, vision, and guiding principles the Manager will help establish and implement a program and facility plan to increase programs and participant numbers.
The Manager is responsible for three primary operational areas: Outdoor education and recreation programs; afterschool and day camp programs and facility rentals.
This role is part of the HMR Leadership Team, ensuring onsite support coverage during peak operational hours. This, along with programs and events will require you to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and lead sustainable programming for all seasons at Glenn Carpenter Centre, including Member and Non-Member Programs, Special Events, Corporate Rentals, School Field Trips, After School and Day Camps.
- Ensure programs are integrated and delivered in conjunction with various community supports and resource agencies.
- Research and stay on top of industry trends related to outdoor education to maximize use of centre and property.
- Ensure safe and quality programs are offered based on community needs with increased program participation each year.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with key stakeholders including YMCA staff and volunteers, community agencies, and service providers.
- Coach, develop and support staff and volunteer teams to achieve excellence in service orientation through building relationships and partnerships with program participants.
- Develop an operational plan with clear key performance indicators that will create sustainability for the centre.
- Create the center's budget and manage the facility within its monthly limits.
- Provide input and achieve the YMCA’s strategic goals through participation as part of the leadership team and working with staff.
- Work with the General Manager of Facilities for facility cleaning, maintenance, and capital improvements.
- Other duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree in Outdoor Education or related field is an asset.
- Experience in developing and leading recreation programs is required.
- Minimum of 3 years experience in a Supervisory/Leadership role.
- Previous work experience in and/or certification in an outdoor setting.
- Strong work ethic and excellent organizational skills.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills including written and verbal, a team player.
- Experience in recruitment, hiring, performance management, and training of staff.
- Computer literate and able to function within Microsoft Office and Windows environments.
- Experience in developing and managing a budget.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Clean Criminal Record Check.

WORKING CONDITIONS
- As a full-time YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick staff person, your hours of work will vary.
- The YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick has a Joint Health and Safety Committee which meets on a monthly basis to discuss health and safety within the workplace. Questions or concerns about your workplace must be brought forward to committee members.
- In this role, you will be required to work in an environment which is often busy with high levels of noise.
- You are responsible for your own travel to and from work.
- You are responsible for the member/client’s safety on a daily basis. You will be required to perform first aid and CPR when necessary and you are certified to do so.
- You will be responsible to follow and abide by YMCA SAM 2.0 Standards, ensuring a clean and well-maintained centre is required by all staff persons.
