Job Summary:
The Manager, Editorial leads and manages the editorial function for CSA Group in support of the authoring, improving, and maintaining of standards-related product content with the intent of achieving CSA Group’s business goals. This role will work closely with the manager to identify, develop, and implement the editorial strategies which focus on product delivery and quality within the Standards division. This role has direct oversight of internal editors and external editorial resources including translators and is responsible for the integrity of the editorial process including quality assurance. The Managing Editor oversees and directs work assignments, troubleshoots issues, and ensures adherence to editorial and education style guides and standards development directives to meet accreditation requirements. This role requires sound knowledge of the editorial function to ensure the Standards division follows industry best practices and leverages innovative workflow and technology tools to deliver high-quality products on time and on budget.
Responsibilities:
- Works with manager to develop, implement and execute the Editorial strategies that focus on on-time product delivery and product quality within the Standards Division.
- Responsible for ensuring structural and stylistic editing for proper organization of content, readability, clarity of expression, legal liability, copyright protection, accessibility, and conformity to CSA’s directives, accreditation requirements, style guide, and operating procedures regarding the drafting of standards.
- Oversees the development of accessible standards content to meet WCAG 2.0 requirements.
- In conjunction with the Production Manager, ensures project assets are structured and stored correctly on the network and within applicable workflow systems and that metadata and file naming conventions follow CSA Group guidelines.
- Is the subject matter expert and provides functional expertise to identify, research, and resolve complex problems.
- Responsible for maintaining CSA Group’s directives, guidelines, and operating procedures by ensuring that current practices are accurately recorded and considered during development and revisions.
- Provides strategic leadership and direction to Editorial team.
- Ensures team reviews editorial changes and queries with Standards Development team members and/or committee members and ensures that all issues of substance are addressed before publication.
- Supports French translation process with external translators, external expert reviewers and Production Coordinator ensuring technical accuracy and consistency of all standards products.
- Hires, manages, trains, and provides clear performance expectations and objectives to editorial team; conducts performance evaluations, provides feedback, and coaches/mentors staff.
- Responsible for planning and managing the editorial schedule to ensure on-time delivery of standards publications per the publication plan, working in conjunction with the Production Manager, tracks projects and monitors schedules while providing up-to-date status information.
- Directly oversees and effectively manages costs related to editorial resources and provides input into the budgeting process.
- Engages with Procurement to identify and negotiate contractor services in compliance with CSA Group requirements.
- Implements consistent policies, procedures, and workflows to ensure the quality and compliance of CSA Group products including adherence to accreditation requirements.
- Responsible for the review and maintenance of CSA Group’s SDP 3.2 Editorial requirements and guidelines to ensure alignment with CSA Group’s accreditation requirements.
- Contributes to departmental, divisional, and corporate initiatives as required. Examples: Customer loyalty, continuous quality improvement, and process improvement (LEAN Initiatives).
Preferred Qualifications:
- University Degree (BA in English, French, Journalism, Communications, or other relevant disciplines), or equivalent.
- Minimum 10 years of related editorial work experience.
- 5-7 years of strong team leadership and change management experience.
- 3-5 years of managerial/supervisory experience.
- Proven ability to manage conflicting priorities, resolve issues and facilitate positive systemic improvements.
- Team leadership experience required.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, Adobe Acrobat Professional.
- Experience in on-screen editing.
- Proficiency in XML-based publishing tool (e.g., Arbortext or other).
- Familiarity with technical writing in English, French, or both is an asset.
