Job Description:

Summary: The Manager, Community Engagement is a new position in the Education and Advocacy Departments, and will work interdepartmentally with Wellness, Experience, Development, and other teams at Farm Sanctuary (FS). This position will build community relationships on-site at Sanctuary, regionally, and nationally, matching volunteers’ skills, interests, and connections with Farm Sanctuary’s needs and goals to advance our mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Build, facilitate, and support relationships with on-site and remote volunteers
  • Develop toolkits to support remote volunteers building community action networks in their own communities
  • Work inter-departmentally with all departments to identify specific volunteer needs across the organization
  • Identify and create opportunities for robust volunteer engagement (e.g., outreach tabling, legislative and lobbying opportunities, onsite projects and events, facilitating the development and distribution of activist tools)
  • Collaborate with FS team members and external partners to design and implement effective volunteer programs, internally and externally
  • Develop structured training opportunities and materials to promote a streamlined and consistent approach to educating and empowering the volunteers
  • Collaborate inter-departmentally to provide an on-site and virtual training calendar for volunteers and supporters
  • Respond to incoming volunteer inquiries
  • Recruit, train, inspire, and engage volunteers and community activists
  • Strategize and implement an engagement plan with the Communications Department to promote volunteer opportunities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years experience in community/grassroots organizing and/or working in animal welfare
  • Skilled at engaging with and understanding diverse communities
  • Effective interpersonal communicator
  • Ability to work collaboratively and interdepartmentally within an organization
  • Adept at identifying and nurturing volunteer initiatives that reflect Farm Sanctuary’s mission
  • Proficient organizational skills and efficient time management
  • Experienced in identifying and utilizing talent of skilled and mission-driven individuals
  • A desire to be a visionary in developing a robust foundation to educate and empower volunteers and aligned supporters who want to make a difference for farmed animal welfare and plant-based food access
  • Alignment with Farm Sanctuary’s values of compassion, understanding, integrity, transformation, and freedom
  • Familiarity, commitment to, and experience with the practice of equity and social justice, and the principles embedded in Farm Sanctuary’s mission

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move for extended periods during the workday
  • Ability to travel to offsite locations for events, meetings, or volunteer engagements
  • Ability to use standard office equipment, including a computer, keyboard, mouse, and phone
  • Ability to read printed and digital materials, including reports, emails, and volunteer training materials
  • Ability to hear and respond effectively during in-person or virtual meetings and phone conversations
  • Ability to bend, kneel, lift, reach up to 20lbs, with or without accommodation

  • Terms of employment: Permanent, full-time, non-exempt
  • Reports to: Senior Director, Education and Advocacy
  • Location: Acton, CA
  • Travel: Local travel is required; interstate travel occasional
