Employment Type: Full– Permanent.

Salary Range: M4 Level 7, $138,877- $173,596 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

Manager, Coal Mining, Regulatory Applications – Hybrid

The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently recruiting for a Manager, Coal Mining to join its leadership team in Oil Sands and Coal Mining in the Regulatory Applications branch. This leadership role focuses on managing multi-disciplinary technical experts responsible for making decisions on complex mining applications and operational reviews while effectively achieving the desired goals and outcomes of the AER and Regulatory Applications Branch.

As the Manager, Coal Mining you will be responsible for integration, enterprise-wide cooperation and making decisions on applications, operational reviews and joint inspections under the Coal Conservation Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act including Environmental Impact Assessments, Water Act, Mineral Resource Development Act and the Public Lands Act. This role also includes an emphasis on working with a diverse network including industry, government and stakeholders, and representing the AER in multi-stakeholder forums.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Lead a cohesive team of subject matter experts with diverse technical knowledge and experience by setting objectives, coaching, and providing feedback and recognition. Delegate work, communicate organizational information, and guide employees through change. Apply AER’s people management policies in an inclusive, diverse environment.
  • Actively lead, sponsor and champion transformational change and continuous improvement activities both internal and external to the AER (e.g., Integrated Decision Approach and Red Tape Reduction). This includes both people leadership and technical contributions.
  • Make timely decisions that significantly impact the AER and Regulatory Applications Branch's goals and outcomes. This includes statutory decisions on complex applications, submissions, action requests, hearing support, resource planning, and business insights to guide future team planning.
  • Monitor progress and assure team productivity to deliver results and meet AER performance goals and maintain alignment with group and corporate operational plans. Ensure team meets AER application and submission timelines.
  • Engage with other leadership levels and peers within all sectors and across divisions to support a collaborative and enterprise-first approach to effectively regulate the full life cycle of coal development.
  • Represent the AER effectively in meetings with industry, public, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), and other government agencies.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Science, Geology, or a related field including 10+ years of experience and extensive knowledge of energy and mining regulations.
  • 5+ years of people leadership experience overseeing diverse teams of technical experts. This includes having strong collaboration and cooperation skills and being visible and supportive.
  • Professional accreditation (Professional Engineer, Geologist, Agrologist, Biologist Chemist) from Alberta is considered an asset.
  • Having a “how can I help you?” attitude. Excellent open, honest and transparent communication skills (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain credibility across all levels of internal and external relationships. Proactively deal with conflict in a positive and productive manner.
  • Experience and proven success as a change agent leader within an organization. Model and lead by example the culture communicated by the AER board.
  • Ability to think strategically, critically, identify emerging operational issues, and develop options for resolution. Enterprise thinking – this means thinking of the impact and connections made outside the immediate team and work area.
  • Ability to make decisions in appropriate time and deliver and execute Security.
  • Possess a fully valid class 5 driver’s license along with a positive driving record.
  • Travel is required within the province to support team members and industry engagement 10-20% of the time.
