As part of the Fixed Wing Search & Rescue (FWSAR) Operational Training Unit (OTU) at 19 Wing Comox and reporting to the FWSAR Site Manager, the Manager, Aircrew Instructors will provide all aspects of the training support, including classroom instruction, courseware support, database change review, scenario and lesson plan changes, configuration management and is responsible for standardization of instruction.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise a dynamic team of instructional staff that must meet the requirements of FWSAR aircrew contractual training delivery.
  • Instruct up to 50% of time in either a CC295 pilot or CC295 sensor operator/air combat systems operator capacity.
  • Work closely with the GL Maintenance instruction to support CAE contractual program delivery and other training centre support to DND as required.
  • Interacts with 418 Pilot Training and Squadron Standards officer to provide student training to meet CF needs for the required standard established by the CF.
  • Ensure that instructors are aligned for all matters related to standards of instruction, teaching methodologies, and handling of and reporting on FWSAR students.
  • Ensure that training delivered is consistent with training objectives and teaching points in the training plan, per applicable training standards.
  • Ensure instructional staff is trained and qualified in accordance with the Pilot instructor and Sensor instructor training plans.
  • Ensure the instructor teams maintain currency.
  • Reporting student progress, issues and deficiencies relative to the course delivery.
  • Assist in recruiting, hiring and developing staff to help them achieve their objectives.
  • Create work schedules, plan and coordinate daily activities and work assignments along with future projects to minimize the impact on customers, ensuring that an adequate roster is available at all times to cover contracted Training Availability Window.
  • Prepare performance reviews for team members.
  • Effectively deliver oral and electronic presentations to management and customers.
  • Travel and work shifts/overtime when needed.

Mandatory Qualifications Include

  • Qualified Flying Instructor or Canadian Armed Forces Flying Instructor Course, or as an AESOp / TACCO instructor, or equivalent.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Formal training in Instructional Techniques.
  • Experience with authoring and amending multi-media instructional courseware.
  • Familiar with quality standards, training plans, and training media used to ensure teaching points are met per Training Standards.
  • Customer-centric with experience and success in providing customer service.
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations with tact.
  • Ability to motivate subordinates by empowering them.
  • Ability to foster respect and the exchange of ideas and knowledge through effective communication.
  • Knowledge of customer SOPs.
  • Ability to contribute to the development of teaching aids and courseware.
  • Ability to make good decisions and recommendations on technical and human resources issues.
  • Excellent knowledge of English, read, written and spoken.
  • Thorough understanding of aircraft terminology and simulation devices.
  • Eligibility to work in Canada either as a Canadian Citizen, a Permanent Resident or with a valid Work Permit.
  • Capable of obtaining and maintaining both Controlled Goods Clearance and a Level II NATO Secret security clearance is required.

Desirable qualifications include:

  • Simulator or FTD instructor experience.
  • Ability to deliver synthetic environment training using flight simulators and other tools.
  • Verbal and written French second language skills.
  • Previous experience supporting RCAF training delivery in a leadership or instructional role.
  • Previous experience as simulator technician.
  • Experience with CAE simulators or training devices.
  • Experience in supervising technicians.
