Employment Opportunity: Maintenance Worker

Location: Halifax, NS

Salary Range: $25/hour

Employment Term: Contract Hire date – March 31, 2026 (possibility of renewal), Part-time hours (21 hours/week)

General Description:

Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre is centrally located in the urban Indigenous community of Halifax and is looking for One (1) Maintenance Worker. The Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Center is a charitable non-profit organization which provides over 45 culturally grounded programs including a Family Resource Center, Direction 180, Mainline Needle Exchange, and the Diamond Bailey Healing Centre.

The Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre is a fast-paced and dynamic work environment. As part of the administration team, Maintenance responsibilities are to ensure that all the properties of the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre are maintained in a healthy, safe and sanitary manner by performing minor maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and oversee all scheduled building renovations and repairs
  • Maintenance Activities:
  • Minor carpentry work (repairs as needed)
  • Contracting/maintaining building repairs as needed i.e. doors, walls, floors
  • Contracting/maintaining building electrical infrastructure
  • Contracting/maintaining junk removal from the building and all emergency exits
  • Ensuring good quality of maintenance activities done
  • Painting
  • Light bulb changing, ensure that all burnt out lights are disposed of properly
  • Conducting regular inspections of properties to ensure general cleanliness, safety and security regulations are met, and preparation of inspection reports
  • Furnace Maintenance:
  • Maintaining seasonal thermostat schedule
  • Weekly flushing of boiler system during winter months
  • Supply control:
  • Monitor janitorial supplies and order as needed
  • Maintain janitorial equipment and storage areas in a clean and organized fashion
  • Safety:
  • Check for burned out lights
  • Check to ensure all emergency exits remain clear of debris
  • Seasonal:
  • Snow removal (clearing doorways)
  • Summer: outdoor debris collection, clean up garbage from entry ways outside, sweep up cigarette butts daily.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma
  • Must provide valid driver’s license and have a vehicle for acquiring/transporting materials
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety standards and completion of WHMIS training
  • Able to work independently or as part of a team
  • Personal attributes: respectful, able to take direction as well as work independently
  • Good written, verbal and listening skills
  • Must be bondable, provide a vulnerable sector check upon hiring
  • Indigenous Ancestry is an asset, must self-identify
