Your role and responsibilities

The quality and innovation of our products, systems, and services engineering keep our customers at the forefront. Developing solutions for our clients worldwide and working on our cutting-edge market technologies will stimulate and enrich your work and mind. The ABB Measurement & Analysis plant in Quebec is a world leader in the field of spectroscopy. Our contract engineering service is the largest Canadian supplier of space optical sensors used, among other things, for monitoring greenhouse gas emissions and global weather forecasting. Our plant is also recognized for its expertise in the development and manufacture of various products that meet several industrial analysis needs daily. By joining one of the largest engineering departments in Quebec, you will actively contribute to our clients' projects, as well as to the research and development of our technology. You will be part of a dynamic and stimulating multidisciplinary team. You will be in charge of internal mechanical manufacturing within the Measurement and Analysis business unit, Quebec City (Canada). Attached to the opto-mechanical group, you will manufacture parts for optical instruments or integration and test assemblies in close collaboration with designers, engineers, and other technical engineering teams (system, electronics, test, and integration). The R&D machinist is responsible for planning manufacturing, programming, determining the required tooling, and ensuring the quality of the final parts while respecting internal processes. The sought-after machinist places great importance on teamwork, demonstrates a high attention to detail, and has good analytical and problem-solving skills. He/she is autonomous, responsible, methodical, shows initiative in establishing good practices, and is dedicated to completing mandates.

1. Program and operate machine tools (5-axis CNC, hybrid lathe, and conventional machines).
2. Read and interpret technical drawings (ASME Y14.5M geometric tolerancing standard).
3. Choose and optimize manufacturing processes and machines (5-axis CNC machining, lathe, and others).
4. Contribute to the establishment of processes in a new machining workshop.
5. Actively participate in manufacturing planning tasks and design reviews to comment on Design For Manufacturing (DFM).
6. Perform routine maintenance of machines, manage tool inventories, coolant, and raw materials.
7. Take measurements using metrology instruments.

Qualifications for the role

• Diploma in machining techniques or equivalent with five years of experience as a CNC machinist (high-precision part manufacturing is an asset).
• Knowledge of materials, mechanical manufacturing processes, heat treatments, and surface treatments.
• Experience in programming 5-axis milling machines and digital lathes (experience with Siemens controllers is an asset).
• Ability to perform machining calculations and experience with the "minimum dimensioning" approach.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD and CAM software; experience with CREO (Pro/ENGINEER) and Fusion 360 are assets.
