Locum Position: Benign/Classical Hematology and Thrombosis

Company/Institution: Hamilton Health Sciences

Location: Hamilton, ON, CAN

Degree Requirements: MD

Job Type: Patient Care

Posted: April 21, 2025

Application Period: September 1, 2025 - August 31, 2026

Hamilton Health Sciences is seeking a locum benign hematologist / thrombosis physician to join our large academic health center for a flexible, clinically focused role from September 1, 2025 onwards. This position offers three to four days a month of combined inpatient/outpatient thrombosis service at the Juravinski Hospital and one-in-five weeks of inpatient benign hematology service at the Hamilton General Hospital and McMaster Medical Centre.

This position is hospital-based, and clinical work includes general/benign/classical hematology and thrombosis. There is no expectation of malignant hematology or internal medicine coverage. For the hematology component of your work, you will provide inpatient service primarily at the Hamilton General with occasional patients at McMaster Medical Centre; the service is purely consultative, and hematologists do not admit patients. The service requirement is 1 week on call in every 5 weeks. For the thrombosis component of your work, you will see both outpatients and inpatients at the Juravinski Hospital. The thrombosis service is also purely consultative, and thrombosis physicians do not admit patients. The service requirement is 3 to 4 days per month.

Your colleagues include 5 physicians at the Hamilton General and McMaster University with expertise in benign hematology, and 5 physicians at the Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre with expertise in thrombosis medicine. We are a warm and collaborative group, and we hope to add a colleague whose interest is in providing clinical care.

Note that you will not be expected to engage in research or formal teaching unless you choose to do so. Advanced learners do rotate through our clinical services; you will be supported in your clinical duties by senior hematology and anaesthesiology residents, as well as transfusion medicine and thrombosis medicine fellows.

What We Offer:

  • A supportive, collegial environment. You will join a team that values your expertise and contributions.
  • Great income potential as a fee-for-service physician in thrombosis and hematology.
  • Comprehensive resources including access to drug access navigators, an outpatient infusion center, and specialized laboratory services.
  • Flexible engagement. We welcome commitments of twelve months, with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement.
  • No expectation of general internal medicine call.
  • No admitting service responsibilities.
  • Administrative support for your inpatient and outpatient work.

Who You Are:

  • A hematologist, holding an MD degree (or equivalent), and licensed in or eligible for licensure in Hematology by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Preference will be given to those who either hold or are eligible for certification in Adult Hematology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
  • A dedicated clinician eager to provide high-quality consultative patient care.
  • Someone with excellent communication skills, who thrives in a collaborative setting.
