As a Licensed Pest Operations Team Leader, you will be at the forefront of maintaining City-owned properties and public spaces through effective pest management strategies. Reporting to the Manager, Integrated Pest Management, you will lead a team, ensuring compliance with provincial legislations and City bylaws. Your responsibilities will include developing and implementing work plans, supervising staff, managing budgets and inventory, and fostering strong communication with various stakeholders. This role requires a proactive approach to safety, a commitment to continuous improvement, and the ability to effectively manage resources to achieve our long-term vision of serving Edmonton’s citizens.

What will you do?

  • Provide leadership, develop, assign, evaluate, schedule, and prioritize work of teams engaged in all facets of integrated pest management operations
  • Attend public, department, corporate and internal meetings as a resource and participant
  • Actively participate in the recruitment, orientation, training, mentor and coaching of Crew Leads, Pest Control Operators, Labourers, and other staff
  • Work as part of key supervisory teams which provide leadership to city-wide Integrated Pest Management operations
  • Promote a safe work environment
  • Encourage staff to generate ideas that improve innovation and efficiency in the delivery of approved work plans
  • Analyze and interpret Pest Operations financial data and management reports to ensure work is performed within budget and on time
  • Participate in performance & attendance management of crew members
  • Ensure all City Occupational Health and Safety Standards, and EnViso policies and procedures are followed and enforced
  • Assist with the development and implementation of SOPs, Hazard Assessments and oversee the implementation and completion of Field Level Hazard Assessment (FLHA) documentation
  • Other duties will be performed as required

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Degree in a related field such as Biology, Environmental Science, Agriculture, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Horticulture, or Turf management
  • Possess and maintain a Pesticide Applicators License in one or more of these categories: Biting Fly, Structural Pests, Exterior Rodents, Landscape
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in parks maintenance, construction, or operations

Assets:

  • Experience working in an urban parks setting
  • Knowledge of local plant species and common pests

Skills required for success:

  • Knowledge of Integrated Pest Management principles
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively and efficiently plan, assign, supervise and evaluate the work of subordinates
  • Standard First Aid Certificate
  • Possession of excellent communication skills (written and verbal), as well as analytical and problem-solving skills and customer service skills
  • Ability to monitor work plans for timeliness, quantity, quality, productivity, unit costing, and accomplishments
  • Experience with Google Applications, Microsoft Word, Excel, SLIM, SAP and Taleo
  • Sound knowledge of Provincial and Federal Legislation, City policies, procedures, bylaws, legislation and the collective agreement between the City of Edmonton and CUPE local 30
  • The successful candidate must arrange their own transportation to the work location. Personal transportation for operational requirements to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This will require business automotive insurance coverage

Conditions of Employment:

  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to extreme temperatures, dry/humid/dusty conditions, and precipitation
  • Physical requirements may include sitting, standing/walking, climbing stairs/ladders, balancing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, manual dexterity, and visual acuity
  • Exposure to chemicals, mechanical/electrical hazards, and animals
  • Other environmental concerns may include working alone and shift work
