Worksite: Central Library, Downtown Vancouver

Job Summary:

Reporting to a Circulation Supervisor, Library Service Assistants work at our Central Library in downtown Vancouver. They are responsible for sorting and shelving a variety of materials, maintaining order and neatness of public areas, and basic preparation of books and materials. They assist in the processing and sorting of materials, and with circulation desk duties. The library welcomes people from all walks of life. We deliver friendly, respectful and responsive service for everyone, regardless of their income, housing situation, or background.

Education/Qualifications:

  1. Completion of Grade 12

Experience:

  1. Experience in a customer service environment is a great asset. Related experience in library services is a benefit, but all should feel welcome to apply. We have a robust training program to help new employees learn the world of public libraries.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Libraries are all about people. We want folks with excellent customer service skills who come to work with patience, warmth, and curiosity for other people.
  2. Library work is very physical, with staff moving books and materials throughout the day. We are looking for those who are able to perform routine tasks with a high degree of physical stamina and accuracy. Physical movements such as bending, reaching, lifting, squatting, gripping, and pushing book trucks are involved throughout a shift. Experience with lifting and handling large volumes of orders/materials is necessary for this role. Knowledge about library methods and procedures is an asset.
  3. Good oral and written communication skills. We are looking for people who are flexible and like working with others, showing kindness and being clear communicators.
  4. We are looking for those who can plan, are organized, carry out assigned duties on time, fulfill commitments, and take pride in doing good work. Candidates should have the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with team members.

Salary: $24.04 to $28.10 per hour
Work Schedule:

Monday – Thursday: 12:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Sunday: 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
