Job description

Richard Bland College (RBC) is a two-year, residential, liberal arts transfer institution that focuses on preparing students for transfer to highly ranked colleges and universities. The College is a hidden gem located outside the Tri-Cities region—and its rural setting featuring 750+ acres of wetlands, bucolic forest, and the state’s oldest and largest pecan grove.

Richard Bland College of William & Mary is currently seeking a qualified Library Assistant. The Library Assistant will be responsible for overseeing routine circulation, interlibrary loan, and reference services. Additionally, the Library Assistant will be responsible for hiring and managing student workers.

Job Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing circulation and reserves in terms of policies, scheduling, daily operation, and staffing the service desk.
  • Processing overdue fines and fees.
  • Supervising the information commons of the library and monitoring student behavior.
  • Supervising, assigning duties, and evaluating student library assistants.
  • Providing in-person, email, and telephone reference assistance to students, faculty, staff, and community patrons.
  • Planning and coordinating library events for the student population.
  • Processing all Interlibrary Loan requests and notifying patrons when their items have arrived.
  • Collecting statistical data on all public services functions, including circulation, reserves, and reference.
  • Opening and closing the library as needed.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Cooperative spirit who enjoys working in a fast-paced small library.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to troubleshoot hardware/software computer issues.

Additional Considerations

Bachelor’s degree in library science, information science, or related field OR an equivalent combination of experience and/or training may be substituted for the relevant degree.
