About New Westminster Public Library:

The City of New Westminster is a socially, economically and culturally diverse community of approximately 82,000 residents. Who we are looking for:

Reporting to the Manager of Programs and Community Development the Programming and Community Development Librarian is accountable for the development and delivery of branch and community programs and services for all ages. Functioning in a team environment, the Programming and Community Development Librarian will provide and support program planning and implementation, information and reference services, reader’s advisory and digital assistance and collection development. They will ensure the strategic goals of New Westminster Public Library are met through outreach initiatives and delivery of their portfolio assignments through training, coaching and supporting library staff delivering programs, fostering community development and conducting outreach.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Community Programming & Outreach

  • Assesses and evaluates community needs and opportunities in the development of programs and services that align with the organization’s strategic goals;
  • Designs and delivers programs that augment awareness of the collection and services of the library for implementation at branches or within the community;
  • Continually measures and evaluates the effectiveness of programs and outreach campaigns, making recommendations to the Manager of Programs and Community Development;
  • Liaises with relevant community organizations and groups to build and maintain a network of community contacts;
  • Coordinates and implements outreach campaigns to educational institutions, businesses and other organizations;
  • Uses outreach opportunities to engage customers in library membership and positions the library as a trusted community development partner;
  • Works well with others, ensuring awareness of the library’s programs, through print and online promotions;
  • Facilitates a welcoming environment for community volunteers assisting with programming and/or outreach.

2. Customer Service and Access

  • Models and provides service excellence in all interactions with the public;
  • Communicates effectively with a variety of audiences and individuals from diverse backgrounds;
  • Provides readers’ advisory, reference, library orientation, customer service, research support and membership updates;
  • Leads projects related to programs, services and events, as required;
  • Develops and presents group or individual instruction in the use of library services, collections and related technologies; May update and maintain content on the library website and social media.
  • May participate in the development, maintenance and analysis of library collections to ensure the collections meet community needs.

CONDITIONS OF WORK:

  • Hours and schedules are always subject to change due to operational need and reviewed on an annual basis.
  • Library Staff may participate in the City of New Westminster’s Compressed Day Off program.
  • This position will be required to work on site at the Uptown Main Branch of the library. Options for some remote time may be considered after successful completion of a 6 month probationary period, though this cannot be guaranteed.
  • Required to work at any branch in the New Westminster Library system.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school.
  • Minimum 2 years experience in public library program planning and community engagement or demonstrated equivalent experience.
  • Applicants must be able to pass and maintain a clear Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Fluency in languages other than English
  • Experience delivering programs for all ages including children and seniors in languages other than English.
  • Experience delivering programs, engaging in community development or conducting outreach to diverse, marginalized and vulnerable populations.
  • Experience delivering and developing accessible programs and services.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS:

  • All applications will be reviewed beginning in January 2025.
  • Those selected for an interview will be contacted by telephone or email, for a pre-screening telephone call.
  • Interview questions will be provided in advance of the interview.
  • Interviews will be conducted in-person led by the Manager of Programs and Community Development and two other members of the library staff.
  • Results of the interviews will be reviewed and the candidate will be selected for the position.
  • Following successful completion of a vulnerable sector check and a signed letter of offer, the successful candidate would begin their position at a date and time to be determined.
