Job description

Provide legal and regulatory support to our equities exchanges (TSX, TSXV and Alpha) and partner with business to achieve desired outcomes.

Act as key legal adviser for new initiatives related to our equities trading and data businesses, including design and implementation of new or modifications to existing businesses, products and services.

Advise internal stakeholders of the legal / regulatory risks for new initiatives and develop strategies, in collaboration with stakeholders, to mitigate or manage such risks.

Provide clear actionable recommendations supported by thoughtful analysis on legal, regulatory issues with adequate consideration of broader business considerations.

Be actively involved in all aspects of the board and regulatory approval process for changes to exchange rules and fees and new product offerings.

Cultivate strong working relationships with the staff of key regulators.

Build and maintain expertise in evolving policy developments, regulatory requirements or expectations in Canada and other jurisdictions applicable to our equities exchanges and the securities industry generally, and advise internal stakeholders to support strong compliance and maintenance of best practices.

Assist with advocacy in areas of regulatory reform, including drafting responses to requests for comment on proposals that may affect TMX Group businesses, with input from the relevant stakeholders.

Requirements

Member of law society in any province of Canada in good standing.

3-7 years legal experience in securities, corporate and / or commercial with a reputable company or top tier law firm.

Experience as a securities lawyer and strong understanding of securities regulation is an asset.

Interest in equities trading, capital markets, new regulatory developments and financial innovation.

Strong advocacy skills, and the ability to succinctly explain complex matters to audiences with varying degrees of background information.

Understands how to work effectively within a broader enterprise with overarching priorities.

Contributes to a culture of high performance, accountability and inclusivity.

Strong attention to detail, but also the ability to remain focused on the big picture.

Recognizes the importance of understanding client needs and giving intelligent, thoughtful and practical advice.
