Salary

The salary range for this position is CAD $45.48/Hr. - CAD $65.38/Hr.

Job Summary

Come work as a Legal Counsel 1 with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)!

Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel, the Legal Counsel 1 possesses strong legal research, legal analysis, and client relations skills. The Legal Counsel 1 conducts intake, as assigned, of client’s legal advice inquiries and conducts issues identification, legal research, and upfront legal analysis for the Senior Legal Counsel. Under the guidance of the Senior Legal Counsel, the Legal Counsel 1 participates in assessing and making recommendations on policies, procedures and practices. The Legal Counsel 1 will work closely with the Senior Legal Counsel as part of an in-house legal team to support VCH leaders, managers, and staff.

As a Legal Counsel 1 with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Conduct intake, as assigned, of client’s legal advice inquiries, including conducting client intake interviews and requesting and reviewing relevant documents and information.
  • Conduct issues identification, legal research, and upfront legal analysis for the Senior Legal Counsel, in order to support the Senior Legal Counsel in providing strategic legal advice and opinions to VCH leadership.
  • Work closely, under the guidance of the Senior Legal Counsel, with a diverse set of professionals including operations, finance, human resources, risk management, professional practice leaders and other clinical and corporate functions to provide legal support on various VCH projects and strategic initiatives.
  • Advise internal stakeholders, under the guidance of the Senior Legal Counsel, on legal strategies and solutions to mitigate legal risk.
  • Participate in assessing and making recommendations on policies, procedures and practices under the guidance of the Senior Legal Counsel.
  • Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep up-to-date with health sector trends, new/revised legislation and developing case law.
  • Perform other job-related duties.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Law Degree from a recognized University supplemented by zero (0) to four (4) years of recent, related experience practicing law, preferably with a public sector organization or a firm providing legal services to a public sector organization.
  • Health care experience or health law advising experience is an asset.
  • A member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia (or eligible for membership within a specified period).

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Strong legal research and legal analysis skills.
  • Ability to multitask effectively.
  • Familiarity with and/or ability to understand complex healthcare systems.
  • Ability to develop and bring forward solutions and communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing) with a variety of audiences.
  • Some experience in reviewing and drafting legal documents such as affidavits and legal agreements.
  • Ability to foster and maintain positive relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Exemplary interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Models personal integrity and accountability, and is a committed team player.

Closing Statement

As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks.
