Job description

Under the general supervision of the Legal Department Manager, the Legal Assistant will have general oversight into all legal cases and will be responsible for informing appropriate staff on matters relating to the legal cases. The Legal Assistant shall assist in the creation, implementation, and evaluation of processes and systems for all legal case files while ensuring confidentiality and privacy is maintained. The Legal Assistant shall be responsible for tracking court dates, legal status, deadlines, and other pertinent information relating to legal files in the department. They shall oversee the legal area and consult with legal counsel on cases where required. The Legal Assistant is responsible for all legal files relating to the MCFN Child & Family Services department and shall ensure that all files are safely stored and protected in an organized filing system.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Post Secondary Education in law preferred, post-secondary education in business or office administration with legal training or experience may be accepted.
  • 2+ Years of experience working in child welfare or with a First Nation/Band Representative Program.
  • Experience working within a First Nation is an asset, Moose Cree preferred.
  • Knowledge of Bill C92 and Moose Cree First Nation’s Law Development process.
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent coordination and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Ability to exercise tact, discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Services.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of the culture in which they serve.
  • Fluency in the Moose Cree Language is an asset.

Duration: Permanent with 3-months probation.
