About Hillfield Strathallan College
Founded in 1901, Hillfield Strathallan College (HSC) offers a seamless academic journey from 18 months to 18 years. Learning Commons & IT Integration Officer Position Overview
Reporting to the Learning Commons Coordinator, the LC Technician is responsible for providing support to the College’s Elementary and Senior Learning Commons (ELC, SLC). The incumbent will help build capacity of all users through recommendations for improvements and through job embedded training on the library catalogue, virtual library, and other student support library tools.
Responsibilities
Learning Commons:
- Ensure services remain responsive to the current and future needs of the user community.
- Advance initiatives in support of the College’s digital strategy.
- Assist in launching services in support of the College’s evolving e-learning and digital research initiatives.
- Provide input into the planning and creating of the learning spaces in the Learning Commons.
- Assist users (students and staff) in the use of electronic and print collections.
- Perform bibliographic searching for staff to assist with lesson planning and classroom instruction.
- Copy and original cataloguing of resources using a range of standardized cataloguing tools.
- Select resources based on existing collection, student requests, and teacher-librarian requirements from designated vendors and suppliers; may also complete orders of resources from designated vendors and suppliers.
- Utilize library software systems to retrieve and enter data, generate reports, and notices.
- Assemble and compile a variety of information and data for reports, studies, and other purposes following prescribed methods.
- Process new materials to make them shelf ready, make recommendations for and assist with weeding routines.
- Sort, pack, and unpack materials, verify shipping and receiving records.
- Assist with circulation: charge out, loan periods, holds, shelving, etc.
- Support the use of the collection through displays and promotions of resources.
- Independently supervise and support students.
- Participate in Learning Commons team meetings.
- Participate, as instructed, in the training and supervision of volunteers.
- Assist in the planning and preparation of storytime themes and activities. Read to students during scheduled visits.
- Sit on the planning committee and attend Learning Commons functions outside of regular school hours such as Parent Nights, One School, One Book, Kids’ Lit Quiz, and the Scholastic Book Fair.
- Lead cataloguer - set best practices and standards for the Library Management System and cataloguing practices and attend PD sessions related to the most recent cataloguing rules and practices.
- Assist with the preparation of resources, displays, the Library Management system, and myHSC prior to the start of each school year.
- Additional special/seasonal projects, as assigned by the Learning Commons coordinator.
IT Integration
- Model effective technology fluencies in support of all users.
- Provide workshops and individual support for research-related instruction (MLA, Online Resources, etc.).
- Assist in implementing transformative technologies such as podcasts, wikis, blogs, etc.
- Provide training and support for teachers and students in adopting new technologies.
- Promote effective web literacy.
- Recommend online resources, sites, and databases in support of student-centred learning.
- Provide minor help desk support for IT resources in the Learning Commons including the College’s Learning Management System.
- Contribute to the development of the Learning Commons website.
Qualifications
- Library Technician certification.
- Highly skilled in computers and software to support users and retrieve information.
- Knowledgeable on web searches and developing web pages.
- Ability to communicate effectively; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with learning commons users and staff; to provide guidance and instruction to students and volunteers.
- A demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity, sustainability, and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
- Ability to work independently and exercise initiative in applying rules, procedures, and instructions; to pack and unpack library materials.
Salary: $41,588 to $62,383 (Please note that this salary is prorated based on 10 months).
