Job Description:

Program:

Builds relationships with teens both currently at Southlands Community Church and in the community.

Plans and implements all aspects of the volunteer portion of the weekly program which targets children ages 6-12, with a view to teach camper’s social, emotional, physical, and spiritual development.

Provides oversight and co-ordination of the L.I.T. program volunteers, ensures adequate planning and training for each aspect of the program and the appropriate delegation of duties to each volunteer, with a view to the development of a strong, united team.

Plans and implements volunteer leadership development opportunities for L.I.T. program volunteers, which may include guest speakers.

Plans and implements weekly evening drop-in for teens throughout the summer months.

Assists Day Camp Director with planning and implementation of KidsQuest Day Camp Program.

Works closely with KidsQuest Day Camp staff members.

Interacts broadly with congregational members, community partners and neighborhood families.

Works in cooperation and consultation with the church’s custodial, administrative, and pastoral care staff.

Prays with and shares the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with other staff, volunteers and program attendees and their families as appropriate.

Keeps all information confidential relative to the teens and their families as well as children and families involved in the day camp program.

Works in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

  • Camp participants, parents, Community

MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Reports directly to Corps Officer.
  • Direct reports for this position: None

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

  • None

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The work environment is typically at the Church and outside. Must be flexible. It will include indoor and outdoor settings according to program planning with the possibility of going off-site to local parks or playgrounds within walking distance.

Generally agreeable conditions, with the following exceptions:

Dealing with angry/upset youth and parents as well as Verbal Abuse.

May be exposed to the risk of minor harm, injury, or illness due to:

  • Physical attacks by others
  • Exposure to infectious diseases
  • Moving objects
  • Risk of sport liberated injuries.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

Currently enrolled in High School or holds a High School Diploma.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

Experience in leading or working with youth and with youth programs in a church setting.

Must have a valid Police Check with vulnerable sector screening.

Must have certificate in First Aid/CPR or willingness to receive training.

Willing to take TSA Armatus online training.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Enjoys working with the children and youth.
  • Must have good organizational skills.
  • Works independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must have problem solving and multitasking abilities.
  • Ability to give insight to volunteers.
  • Positive and encouraging attitude.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and discretion.
  • Must be able to join youth in a variety of activities and maintain a high energy level.
  • Attention required when teaching, giving advice/peer support, planning, and development.
  • Maintain focus on the L.I.T.s and program operations daily.
  • Need to be prepared to supervise the teen volunteers and be able to stay positive, upbeat, and encourage them to do the same.
  • Driver’s License with access to a vehicle is an asset.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $15.80 to $17.46 with a maximum of $20.95. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
