Your Opportunity

One Permanent Full Time Position.

Capital Power is currently seeking a proactive and detail-oriented individual with strong AP and project accounting experience, ready to lead and innovate in a dynamic, collaborative environment.

As the Lead, Projects and AP, you will be accountable for project accounting for the company’s sustaining capital projects and oversight of Capital Power’s decentralized Accounts Payable function.

You will contribute to our team by:

  • Leading and supporting the individuals who contribute to the projects and AP functions, including balancing workloads, goal setting, leading team meetings and striving for a positive team environment.
  • Managing the project accounting function including advising on capitalization policy, analyzing project capital spend, preparing monthly capital expenditure reporting, overseeing month-end close procedures for the projects system, reviewing project related journal entries and account reconciliations, and providing overall project support to the business.
  • Coordinating the capital expenditure budget, forecast and long-term plan through collaboration with other Capital Power departments, and supporting the fixed asset planning processes.
  • Coordinating lease accounting processes, including lease contract analysis, updating lease models, providing guidance on IFRS to US GAAP lease accounting, preparing and reviewing lease journal entries, and reviewing lease account reconciliations.
  • Leading and supporting the AP team in ensuring all vendors are paid correctly and on time which includes oversight and review of payment registers (EFT's, wires, online payments and bank accounts for Capital Power Corporation and the numerous partnerships).
  • Leading the AP team in supporting the enterprise on all matters related to invoice entry, vendor set-up, vendor bank account changes, payment, and integration of acquisitions from an AP perspective.
  • Acting as a business partner with contacts throughout the company in matters related to projects and AP, as well as liaising with external and internal audit staff.
  • Ensuring internal controls are operating effectively to support Capital Power's internal control framework.

What you will bring to the role:

Education:

  • Post Secondary Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting or related field
  • Completion of a professional accounting designation (CPA)
  • Educational equivalency may be considered.

Experience:

  • Several years of progressive accounting work experience including month-end accruals, reporting, balance sheet account reconciliations and variance analysis.
  • The ability to automate and improve processes, with an interest in technical solutions and continuous process improvement.
  • Strong attention to detail, excellent planning and organization skills, advanced Excel skills, and can perform in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Your accomplishments must demonstrate you are an effective communicator with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Committed to continuous professional development.
  • The ability to lead a team and collaborate cross-functionally within the organization.
  • Experience in the power industry is considered an asset.

Technical Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of IFRS (e.g., IAS 16, IFRS 16).
  • Strong knowledge of financial systems (Oracle, Oracle Accounts Payable, Oracle Projects and Maximo).
  • Strong knowledge of internal controls.
  • Power BI knowledge considered an asset.

Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid Office/Work from home position, with possible very minimal travel to meet business users at Capital Power facilities or other offices.
  • Overtime hours required during peak periods (Quarter End/Year End), including weekends based on timing of deadlines.

Additional Details:

This position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found.

Clearance of Credit check is required for this position.
