Under the direction of the Technical Laboratory Manager, the Lead Laboratory Technician is responsible assisting in overseeing and directing all Laboratory Technicians in conducting experiments, performing tests, and providing results, analysis and reporting. The Lead Laboratory Technician is also responsible for maintaining the laboratory, equipment and inventory as well as safely handling, storing and disposing of samples, chemicals and other materials.
Job Responsibilities
- Oversee day-to-day and monthly laboratory requirements.
- Manage, mentor, and delegate to the team of Laboratory Technicians.
- Provide Laboratory Technicians with technical knowledge and instruction, as needed.
- Carry out quality control checks of Laboratory Technician work.
- Enforce and maintain all HSE requirements and ensure a high standard of housekeeping.
- Work closely with the Technical Laboratory Manager to ensure deadlines and daily requirements are aligned.
- Work closely with the Technical Laboratory Manager to plan and prepare for lab expansion, growth, and budgeting requirements.
- Ensure clear and concise communication across the Laboratory department.
- Work with management to improve standard operating procedures and policies.
- Maintain the laboratory and all equipment and materials used within the laboratory for conducting testing and housing samples in a safe manner.
- Prepare and present new products and technologies to Magnum’s technical staff and clients where necessary.
- Participate in the writing of papers and performing presentations to promote technology and technical capabilities.
- Conduct testing of formulas according to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), analyzing data, and providing reports to engineering and sales divisions; recalculating formulas as required, and/or retracing formula mix to uncover potential issues that may result in field use.
- Coordinate internal testing of samples (formula mixes/chemicals) upon request.
- Coordinate any external lab testing for services unavailable in house.
- Support and participate in the training of Magnum technical and operations staff.
- Maintain all policies and procedures or SOPs for laboratory to meet health and safety regulations, including safety documentation.
- Support operations as needed, including being on-call and offering 24-hour support on a weekly rotational basis.
- Order supplies and chemicals to maintain laboratory inventory.
- Participate in training and development activities.
- Other related duties as required.
Qualifications - Required - Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in slurry and additive design, Research & Development and exposure to international markets.
- Demonstrated ability to direct and motivate the work of others.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects and adapt to changing work demands.
- Able to work overtime and travel.
- Legally eligible to work in the country the role is based out of.
Qualifications - Looking For - Minimum 7 years previous laboratory experience in a research and development laboratory environment, preferably in a supervisory role.
- Basic understanding of field operations.
- Ability to apply judgment in handling hazardous chemicals; knowledge of chemical properties.
- Proven ability to translate chemistry complexities into basic terminology.
- High level of professional conduct, customer service orientated.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
- Ability to self-manage and work independently.
- Strong work ethic, positive attitude, reliable, and dependable.
- Flexible and able to adapt to change.

Qualifications - Assets - Previous work experience in the oil & gas industry or experience in cementing services.
- Training in OHS including WHMIS, TDG, etc.
