The Lead, Evidence will work in a dynamic, fast-paced and highly collaborative environment to execute high-quality evidence products to inform the development of policies and guidance on gender-affirming care and on other emerging areas within Ontario’s health care system.

The role is key support for the Manager, Emerging Guidelines and Programs (EGP) for developing guidelines, policies and programs for emerging areas in health care and screening. The Lead is responsible for developing strong partnerships with leaders across Ontario Health (OH) and for leading multiple concurrent projects.

The role partners with Provincial Clinical Leads to support the development and implementation of emerging guidelines, programs and policy development.

Here is what you will be doing:

Leadership & Subject Matter Expertise:

  • Provides leadership and subject matter expertise on multiple concurrent projects with respect to content, process, and methods in order to provide actionable insights for the Emerging Guidelines and Program team’s projects and Ontario Health more broadly
  • Leads the design and development of high-quality evidence products requiring the use of rigorous and advanced methodologies (e.g., systematic and rapid reviews) and development of detailed project plans
  • Identifies, analyzes, critically appraises, and synthesizes scientific and grey literature using traditional and new methodologies
  • Monitors, collates and synthesizes emerging evidence to facilitate planning and decision making
  • Partners with subject matter experts to develop and execute robust synthesis methodology, ensure accurate interpretation of evidence and develop clear, actionable deliverables
  • Leads and contributes to cross-program and cross-portfolio working groups and committees to inform and deliver on projects as required
  • Leads development and tracks progress against the annual work plan, ensuring timelines and deliverables are met, including adapting work plans to accommodate shifting priorities and timelines
  • Translates evidence by developing and presenting material for review and informational purposes using excellent written, verbal, and graphical communications skills, with ability to express complex concepts effectively
  • Serves as an expert consultant on evidence subject matter within Ontario Health and to external agencies and other partners as required
  • Provides on-going status updates, feedback and appropriate reporting on projects to the Manager
  • Trains and mentors staff in conducting complex syntheses of scientific and grey literature
  • Upholds the importance of core values and is committed to maintaining positive organizational culture
  • Resolves problems, identifies risks, and escalates to leadership on a timely basis

Coordination and Collaboration:

  • Uses collaborative approaches to work with internal OH colleagues, clinicians, scientists and leadership to design, execute, and disseminate the findings of evidence products
  • Collaborates with corporate services and other Ontario Health colleagues to support and execute other administrative and project-related activities
  • Leads and collaborates with others in developing new tools/methods, processes, training materials, documented programs, and related deliverables
  • Collaborates with Lead, Health Policy and other EGP team members on policy and program recommendations and presenting evidence products and analysis to expert panels and other internal and external partners
  • Collaborates with EGP team members on the execution of time-sensitive projects to inform policy and program guidance

Relationship Management:

  • Develops relationships with colleagues within the team and department, across the organization, and externally to understand best practices, issues, and needs related to evidence synthesis and knowledge translation
  • Shares appropriately tailored information to enable understanding of complex methodologies and results
  • Uses advanced facilitation, communication, and interpersonal skills to contribute to working groups/committees, and liaise with Ontario Health staff, external partners and the public
  • Effectively engages, consults and communicates to a wide variety of internal and external partners (e.g., Clinical and Scientific Leads, scientists, members of leadership and staff, external clinicians and subject matter experts)
  • Demonstrates leadership and integrity in interactions with internal and external partners

Here is what you will need to be successful:

Education and Experience

  • Completion of a graduate degree (e.g., MPH, MSc, PhD) in epidemiology, public health or a recognized equivalent
  • A minimum of seven years practical and related experience developing evidence synthesis products (i.e., systematic and/or rapid reviews) and applying relevant methods to synthesize complex evidence and critically appraising scientific literature
  • Experience with health services research methods and statistical analysis
  • Expertise in 2SLGBTQIA+ health and specifically an understanding of the health care needs and experiences of gender diverse patients
  • An understanding of Ontario’s health care system with particular emphasis on health equity and population health approaches, public health theory and practice

Knowledge and Skills

  • Superior and demonstrated communication skills, including listening, written, verbal, and graphical communication skills, with the ability to prepare technical reports, briefing notes and peer reviewed publications and deliver presentations on complex concepts effectively to a wide variety of audiences
  • Exceptionally detail-oriented with strong problem solving, critical thinking, and negotiation skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in a self-directed manner with minimum supervision
  • Advanced analytic and interpretive skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of 2SLGBTQIA+ health, health equity, Indigenous cultural safety, anti-racism and anti-oppression practice
  • Highly productive and motivated; able to work on multiple initiatives and prioritize competing assignments to meet timelines
  • Collaborative with the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment; experience working directly with clinical experts and/or health care administrators preferred
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with a degree of uncertainty or ambiguity
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Experience with systematic review and reference management software is an asset
  • Experience with qualitative synthesis methods is an asset
