Job Information and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Manager, HR Operations the Labour Relations Assistant will:

  • Be primarily responsible for the support and delivery of Labour Relations services in support of five (5) collective agreements.
  • Coordinate the administrative requirements associated with the Collective Agreements.
  • Conduct research and data analysis as directed. Compile, analyze and summarize data from various sources.
  • Assist in all aspects of the grievance process and arbitration, including the drafting of documentation such as grievance responses and lists of documents. Acquire and assemble research materials for grievances, collective bargaining and other projects as required.
  • Summarize data, and generate reports, letters and other documents for a variety of audiences including committee(s), the Unions, the People & Culture department, and various other University departments as required. This includes composing and distributing correspondence related to administrative matters, grievances and preparing and distributing materials for meetings.
  • Participate in the development of strategies, goals and objectives for the Labour Relations team.
  • Under the direction of the Senior Labour Relations Partner, keep informed on articles of the Collective Agreement, as well as past practice, in order to respond to inquiries from Deans, Chairs, faculty members, and staff about deadlines, documentation, and other technical requirements.
  • Track issues that might require addressing in the next round of bargaining and support the bargaining team(s) as required.
  • Proofread, format, edit and oversee the distribution of Collective Agreements for all bargaining units. Coordinate and act as Recording Secretary for the Labour/Management Committees, as required.
  • Support the Talent Acquisition team with administrative tasks as required.

Experience and Education Requirements

To be the successful Labour Relations Assistant you will have:

  • High School diploma and a 2-year community college diploma or Certificate in Human Resources Management is preferred.
  • Advanced working knowledge of relevant employment, labour and human rights legislation and regulations and collective agreements.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience at an academic institution or similar environment administering academic collective agreement(s) and understanding of the academic process / work environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; written and oral communication, conflict resolution, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, team-oriented environment and multi-task.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Computer competency essential (Microsoft Office).
  • Experience with collective bargaining an asset.
  • Experience with HRIS systems an asset.
