Laboratory Technician in Electronics (Regular full-time)

POSITION: Laboratory Technician in Electronics

DEPARTMENT: Academic Services

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Associate Academic Dean

TYPE OF HIRING: Regular Full-time

WORK SCHEDULE: Schedule to be determined depending on laboratories.

SALARY RANGE: $26.38 – $35.22

SUMMARY: The principal and customary work of the employee in this employment class consists in assisting the teaching personnel in the preparation, presentation, supervision and evaluation of laboratory work, field work and workshops and to perform different technical functions related to the maintenance, calibration, repair, modification and installation of systems, equipment and instruments within an Electronics laboratory.

DUTIES:

  1. Performs all tasks required to adapt existing equipment to the demands of new technologies employed within the Electronics department.
  2. Is responsible for the purchasing of parts, tools and equipment manuals for the repair of the equipment within the Electronics laboratory.
  3. Assists the teaching staff in the preparation of equipment for laboratory sessions.
  4. Assists in the supervision of activities related to laboratory sessions, training courses or workshops.
  5. Ensures the proper storage and functioning of equipment.
  6. Maintains the inventory of equipment and supplies.
  7. Participates in the selection of equipment for the Electronics laboratory.
  8. Obtains quotes related to the purchase of equipment.
  9. Completes purchase orders for signature.
  10. Examines, assembles, installs and tests new equipment.
  11. Performs installation and, where possible, repairs and maintenance of all equipment within the Electronics laboratory.
  12. May be asked to train less experienced technicians and to coordinate the work of other support employees involved in the carrying out of programs or technical operations for which he/she is responsible.
  13. Responsible for WHMIS tracking.
  14. Performs duties of demonstrator, monitor and supervisor as need be.
  15. Performs, when necessary, all other related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must hold a diploma of collegial studies (DEC) or have a diploma in an appropriate field of specialization or the equivalent.
  2. Must have at least one (1) year of pertinent experience with electronics preparations.
  3. Must possess excellent English language skills, and fluency in French would be considered an asset.
  4. Must have or be willing to obtain Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) certification.
  5. Must have or be willing to obtain First Aid training certification.
  6. Must have information technology knowledge in terms of installing software, upgrading desktops and laptops, configuring routers and switches using command line interfaces.
  7. Experience with Microsoft Office is essential.

  4. Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, and have the ability to work as part of a team.
  5. Must be able to work effectively with respect to deadlines and produce accurate results.
  6. Must be flexible and able to adapt quickly to different situations.
  7. Must have excellent customer service skills.
  8. Must have a strong work ethic and exercise discretion.
  9. Previous laboratory experience will be considered an asset.
  10. Previous experience with procurement will be considered an asset.
