The department of Biological Sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) pursues detailed knowledge of the natural world, effective management of natural resources, novel technologies and medical techniques. YOUR OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the Manager, Operations and Finance, the Laboratory Manager has full managerial authority over the department’s Teaching Laboratories, Wash Sterilization, and Greenhouse facilities. The incumbent is responsible for human resource management including organizational design, assignment of work, as well as the hiring, performance management, and professional development of staff. The incumbent supports the financial management of the undergraduate Biology Teaching Laboratories, Wash Sterilization, and Greenhouse by providing input into the development and planning of annual budgets, researching and purchasing supplies and equipment, reconciling, and authorizing purchases of materials, parts, supplies and equipment. With a high level of autonomy, the incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the undergraduate Biology Teaching Laboratories, Wash Sterilization, and Greenhouse, as well as for the management of academic services and programming. The incumbent exercises a high degree of creativity, judgment, and initiative in creating strategies and solutions, and is required to have a strong understanding of the internal workings and policies of the University.
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for managing the undergraduate Biology labs. Responsibilities include addressing attendant organizational issues of tutorial and laboratory delivery such as scheduling, room booking, website updates, technical requirements, management of Laboratory Technicians and Teaching Assistants, in conjunction with faculty. The incumbent provides general guidance to the Course Coordinator in undergraduate Introductory Biology administrative duties. The Laboratory Manager contributes to the development of laboratory teaching materials such as the lab manuals, quizzes, tutorials, and exam supervision; ensuring that exam and course marks are entered into the appropriate database. The incumbent is responsible for the coordination and facilitation of Teaching Assistant training.
The Laboratory Manager identifies opportunities to facilitate the renewal of laboratory content, develops strategies to improve the “student experience” for the undergraduate Biology labs, and identifies efficiencies for effective use of resources.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
- B.Sc. in Biology with some course work in Chemistry or equivalent combination of education and experience
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience
- A thorough knowledge of Biology and general chemistry at the undergraduate level is required, as is laboratory experience
- Experience coordinating lectures/laboratories at the university level and use of course management software (e.g., Quercus) are strong assets
- Experience managing in a unionized environment
- A good working knowledge of financial management, human resources and environmental health and safety policies and procedures is a requirement of this position
SKILLS:
- Must have excellent analytical skills (an aptitude for figures)
- Excellent computer skills, including Excel, Word, e-mail, internet, and web maintenance skills
- Must be able to operate the following equipment: microscopes (dissecting, compound light, fluorescence, inverted); centrifuges; balances (top-loading and analytical); pH meters; electrophoresis apparatus; conductivity meters; spectrophotometers; microplate readers, q-PCR and PCR machines, imaging equipment
OTHER:
- Excellent communication (both oral and written) and organizational skills
- Excellent decision-making and interpersonal skills
- Ability to organize, coordinate and effectively communicate activities as they relate to students and faculty
- Experience in laboratory management
- Qualification as a First Aid responder is an asset
- Must have WHMIS & Chemical Safety training and Biosafety Training or be willing to be trained
