Description

The Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Lab Technician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 8 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Laboratory Technician will report to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Jackie Lebenzon, and will work with the Principal Investigator to support the research team via administrative and technical support.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Lab Maintenance and set-up

  • Set-up and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization of the laboratory environment.
  • Assist the Principal Investigator in administrative tasks related to day-to-day lab operations.
  • Prepare standard operating procedures for equipment and onboarding.

Insect rearing

  • Maintain continuous populations of Colorado potato beetles in Lebenzon Lab environmental chambers.
  • Maintain continuous stock of potato plants in the BioSci greenhouses.
  • Prepare standard operating procedures for insect rearing.

Experimentation

  • Set up and conduct experiments related to insect physiology.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory instruments.

Data management

  • Record, analyze, and interpret experimental data.

Safety and Compliance

  • Adhere to all safety protocols and regulatory requirements within the laboratory.
  • Conduct routine safety checks and report any issues to the Principal Investigator.

Team Collaboration

  • Participate in weekly lab meetings with fellow researchers and graduate students on various projects and contribute to planning experiments.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience engaged in independent research with an emphasis on molecular physiology.
  • Strong organization, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with insect rearing is an asset.
