Junior Mechanical Technologist

Position Overview

Mechanical technologists are responsible for implementing projects and supporting production processes to enable the production of composite material based components. This position will be a part of the engineering department supporting production and enabling the delivery of composite components and tooling for both internal usage and as a part of product deliverables.

Responsibilities

Mechanical Technologist

1. Perform hands-on composite manufacturing, including vacuum infusion, wet lay-up, LRTM, and mold making.
2. Work closely with engineers to translate design intent into manufacturable processes.
3. Create and maintain documentation, including work instructions, quality documents, bills of materials, test records, and process specifications.
4. Design and develop jigs and fixtures to support manufacturing operations.
5. Conduct CAD work and generate technical drawings for tooling and customer deliverables.
6. Assist in setting up work cells and optimizing shop layouts for improved workflow.
7. Assist in identification and implementation of process improvements to enhance quality, reduce defects, and minimize costs.
8. Assist in troubleshooting production issues and implementing corrective actions.

Quality Control:

1. Perform quality checks using visual inspection and various measurement tools.
2. Document quality control findings and maintain records for process improvement and compliance.
3. Conduct component inspections using laser trackers and other precision measurement equipment.

Additional Areas:

1. Communicate project status with team members and stakeholders.
2. Support projects and programs beyond composite processes as necessary.
3. Maintain operational documentation for equipment and production processes.

Qualifications

Education

1. Diploma in Design and Manufacturing Engineering Technology, or relevant experience

Experience

1. Exposure to composite materials and manufacturing processes is an asset.
2. Proficiency in CAD software (preferably NX, but any demonstrated experience is acceptable).
3. Familiarity with technical drawings, GD&T, and basic measurement tools.
4. Hands-on experience with fabrication, assembly, and finishing of composite or mechanical components.
5. Ability to obtain controlled goods and security clearance.
6. Strong problem-solving skills and abilities to troubleshoot process and material issues.
7. A clear sense of urgency to achieve results. A “can-do”, “let’s make it happen” attitude and a focus on a positive customer experience.
8. Ability to be comfortable with ambiguity to provide quick strategies that communicate and provide direction internal and external stakeholders at all levels within the organization.
9. Must be able to gather, prioritize and simplify complex information skillfully in terms for appropriate audience.
10. Ability to think proactively, critically and independently to make good decisions.
