We are excited to expand our team and invite applications from highly motivated and quantitatively oriented individuals who want to enter the world of climate services and climate data analytics!
We are looking for a Junior Climate Data Scientist to join our team and help us develop cutting-edge predictive services at the intersection of water resources and climate change. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate who enjoys physical reasoning about the environment, working with geospatial data and programming, and striving to make an impact in the real world.
Climate services and analytics is an emerging, highly interdisciplinary and collaborative field with the potential to improve the world we live in. As the field is relatively young, we are still developing our methods and there are few established standards – we are looking for an individual who thrives in such an environment and is looking for a challenge.
Aquanty is a spin-off company from the University of Waterloo that initially found its footing in integrated hydrological modelling and consulting but has since moved into climate change impact modelling and broader predictive environmental analytics. As a small company, we invest in our staff as our most important asset and emphasize flexibility and self-responsibility over the process.
Job Description:
The successful candidate will be working under the guidance of a senior climate scientist in a highly interdisciplinary team of data scientists, software developers and other Earth scientists.
The day-to-day work will consist of:
This requires a good understanding of computing and data as well as a keen interest in the physics of the Earth system.
The datasets of interest are large climate model datasets, observational climate and hydrometric datasets and satellite/remote sensing data.
These datasets have to be pre-processed, conditioned and statistically corrected to derive industry-specific analytics, run impact models, or train and validate predictive models.
As this is an emerging field and Aquanty maintains close ties to the scientific community, there is also ample opportunity for novel scientific research and scientific publication. The position can also lead to opportunities for report and proposal writing, if there is interest.
Education and Experience:
This is an entry-level position ideal for recent graduates from the physical, mathematical or computer sciences, atmospheric or Earth science or engineering, who want to gain hands-on experience performing data analysis and developing scalable data science workflows, while learning about climate modelling and climate change impacts.
An MSc in atmospheric or Earth sciences or work/project experience in these fields is considered a strong asset, as is hands-on experience with climate (model) or remote sensing data.
The following skill sets are considered assets:
