The Translator will support the company by translating an array of documents from all departments, from English to Inuktitut or Inuktitut to English, across various levels of complexity. The scope of material includes reports to public agencies, human resource materials, communication materials, and public presentations. Accurate translations will positively affect company relations with the North Baffin communities, QIA, NTI, and other stakeholders.
Main Accountabilities
- Provide written translation of both technical and non-technical documents using the North Baffin dialect.
- Edit/proof-read material translated by Cultural Advisors, other Baffinland personnel, or contractors.
- Provide simultaneous and/or consecutive interpretation during Baffinland-led meetings.
- Assist with selecting capable/reliable simultaneous interpreters for Baffinland community tours, workshops, etc.
- Consult with language experts and Elders on appropriate translations due to the lack of standardized terminology in Inuktitut.
- Regularly update and maintain the company Inuktitut terminology glossary.
- Maintain the whisper kits (portable interpreting equipment), compact sound system, and Point Slide Projectors.
- Provide translation-related administrative support to the Head of Northern Affairs.
- Carry out other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Main Qualifications
- Certification from a recognized translator/interpreting training program or education program.
- Proficiency in both written and spoken Inuktitut, as well as English.
- Proficiency in the use of ICI standardized orthographies for Inuktitut.
- Sound syllabic writing skills, including the ability to use syllabic finals competently.
- A minimum of five years’ experience in the field of interpretation or translation.
