Job Description

About the Role

As a Platinum IIP accredited organisation, colleague experience is at the heart of our approach. We believe our Society has a unique purpose and special culture and we are committed to being a great place to work where our colleagues are supported to realise their full potential. We have one exciting new opportunity to join us this September for 12 months within our Internal Audit Team.

Oh and by the way we also don’t just pay a training allowance; you will join us on a ‘real living wage’ salary, we believe our colleagues deserve a fair day’s pay for a hard day’s work.

Our aim is to provide valued assurance for the Society by identifying risks, asking questions, and constructively challenging where we need to. We provide an independent view on risk management, governance and control integral to the success of the Group.

As a team with a group-wide remit, no two days are the same; every business area we audit is different – they each face their own risks and have their own challenges. There is no better way to experience a business area than from interacting directly with the people working there.

With a placement in Internal Audit, you’ll gain valuable skills and experience to support you in the future. You will:

  • Learn about the organisation’s purpose, strategy and goals
  • Learn about the vital role Internal Audit plays in supporting the success of the organisation
  • Get involved with our day-to-day audit work by supporting the audit teams
  • Have the opportunity to interact with a wide range of colleagues
  • Understand how our Society operates and how we audit different business areas
  • Develop your critical-thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and communication skills
  • Explore your innovation skills by taking part in internal audit improvement project work

With the support of your manager, mentor and buddy, you will have objectives to work towards to ensure your development during your time with us. You will have exposure to the responsibilities of the wider team by supporting projects and tasks in the department. We really want to hear your ideas throughout your time with us, so you’ll have lots of opportunity to suggest new and innovative ways of working.

We go beyond the traditional placement route to offer you the opportunity to help you learn and experience things beyond your role that will support your career development through a team challenge project with our Early Talent community.

Assessment Centres to identify the successful candidate will be held throughout April 2025 at Cobalt Business Park.

About You

You will need to have successfully completed the second year of your studies and intend to return to University to complete your final year at the end of your placement. We are interested in all specialisms; however, you should have a desire to work in business and financial services.

You will need to be able to demonstrate:

  • Confidence to communicate effectively via different methods of communication
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
  • An ability to work both independently and within a team
  • Willingness to commit to your own development

About Us

We are a purpose-led business, connecting our communities with a better financial future. Our Internal Audit team delivers an independent, objective assurance and consulting service. Our role is to support the Board and Executive Management to protect the assets, reputation and sustainability of the organisation. We report directly to the Audit Committee and our remit covers the whole Group. Through our work we provide an independent opinion on governance, culture, risk management and internal control. We work collaboratively with management to develop remedial actions to strengthen risk management and internal control which help the Group to successfully achieve its strategic objectives.

As an inclusive employer and member-owned mutual, we aim to reflect the diverse communities we serve and encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds. We believe everyone should feel valued, respected, and celebrated for who they are; we want colleagues to feel this is a place they belong. A place to be you.

What do you get in return? As well as receiving a competitive annual salary based on above-market pay scales, our reward package includes:

  • A 35-hour weekly contract + flexible working options
  • 25 days holiday each year plus bank holidays
  • Bonus scheme
  • Pension scheme
  • Life assurance and income protection
  • Access to a range of wellbeing benefits
  • Electric car salary sacrifice scheme
  • Cycle to Work scheme
  • Above statutory family leave entitlement
  • The option to buy extra holidays
  • Two paid volunteering days each year
  • A broad range of learning and development opportunities
  • Hybrid working - we welcome any discussions around where, how and when people work including part-time hours.

Recognising there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to recruitment, we’re committed to ensuring every candidate has the opportunity to showcase their full potential throughout the recruitment process. We strive to make our processes as accessible as possible; if there are any ways in which we can provide support or make adjustments, we would love to discuss this with you. You can contact Talent Acquisition for this vacancy at recruitment@newcastle.co.uk.
