Intermediate Web Developer (Remote or in-office)

Design de Plume Inc. is an Indigenously-owned, women-led creative agency with its headquarters in Sudbury, Ontario. We provide these services to governments, not-for-profits, cultural organizations, healthcare, and higher education institutions. DDP seeks to expand its operations both domestically and internationally with a team of dynamic and innovative professionals.

The role:

An Intermediate Web Developer is someone with up-to-date skills and knowledge to interpret prototypes and technological requirements into a live web product. They will work on a variety of digital projects (primarily websites) with our team and on their own. At the Intermediate level, they are able to be responsible for their own work with limited oversight and will begin to provide strategic input to project development.

What you’ll do:

  • Interpret design briefs and provide project insights.
  • Issue weekly status updates.
  • Estimate project time and update the Project Manager.
  • Liaise with Senior Developer to ensure development goals are being met.
  • Generate innovative designs that are inclusive and accessible.
  • Adhere to budget and timeline schedules.
  • Interpret constructive feedback in your development process.
  • Promote technical best practices among team members.
  • Proofread your own work and correct errors.
  • Write and debug code based on reading and understanding of provided requirements.
  • Ensure commenting in code is adequate for another developer to assume the project and/or for support to attempt fixes/revisions.
  • Ensure the first pass of quality assurance is completed as a developer before submitting code to peer review and formal Quality Assurance process gates.
  • Ensure architecture is complete, correct and consistent, using best practices and coding standards.
  • Create final files that are error-free and follow file-naming requirements.
  • Assist with Quality Assurance activities associated with the development team.
  • Enter all hours and tasks (billable and non-billable) accurately in the time-keeping system (completed daily by end of day).
  • Actively participate in weekly staff and project meetings and development-led conversations.
  • Communicate all obstacles, risks and challenges on your projects in a timely manner i.e. at huddles.
  • Estimate how long it takes to complete a feature, fix or enhancement.
  • Gather or define requirements for a web project.
  • Familiarity with PHP Coding Standards & WordPress Coding Standards.
  • Strong understanding of PHP, JavaScript and CSS/SCSS.
  • Strong understanding of WordPress custom post types and taxonomies, how to create and implement them effectively.
  • Understanding of the WordPress API, how to utilize in theme development.
  • Grasp of Command Line Tools like WP CLI.
  • Understanding of git, branching and pull requests.
  • Understanding of Debugging in PHP, JS & WordPress.
  • Insight into Accessibility best practices and how to troubleshoot and resolve accessibility issues.
  • Working knowledge of MySQL.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry developments and tools.
  • Support Design de Plume’s overall culture, values and mission.
  • Approach difficult conversations with curiosity and professionalism.
  • Contribute to an environment that is clean, efficient, professional, proactive, and team oriented.
  • Champion IIDEAS (Indigeneity, inclusivity, diversity, equity, accessibility, and sustainability) thinking throughout the design process and company culture.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

What you bring to the team:

  • At minimum, 3 years of proven work experience as a Junior or Intermediate Developer.
  • Strong understanding of development, agile methodologies, and best practices.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with team members at all levels.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, people and priorities simultaneously, while still maintaining a high level of attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative in problem-solving and project development, showcasing a proactive approach to challenges.
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and address issues before they become major roadblocks.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to adjust priorities for whatever task is most important at any given time.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information and align projects to defined goals for clients in a wide array of industries.
  • Experience in mentoring or guiding peers through knowledge sharing and collaboration, fostering a positive and productive team environment.
  • Proven track record of driving innovative solutions and contributing creative ideas that enhance project outcomes and team efficiency.
  • Strong communication skills that inspire and motivate colleagues, contributing to a collaborative and supportive workplace culture.

Benefits at DDP:

  • $60,000 / year
  • 2 weeks of holiday (plus an additional week of paid holiday over our Christmas shut-down).
  • 4 Paid personal days / year.

Please note that these benefits apply to full-time employees.

Work Contract:

  • Full-time, Permanent.
  • Start Date: December 2024.
  • Probation period of 6 months.
  • This is not a freelance role and agency experience is mandatory.
  • Only candidates currently residing within Canada will be considered.

Work Hours:

  • Monday to Friday 9:00am to 4:30pm (EST).

Breaks:

  • 30 minute unpaid break and a 15 minute paid break (can be used together to create a 45 minute lunch or can be used separately).

Holidays:

  • There are 9 paid public holidays per year. National Indigenous day, June 21st and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, September 30th are also considered paid holidays at DDP.
  • Design de Plume is closed approximately 1 week a year around Christmas.

Pay Period:

  • You will be paid bi-weekly on every second Friday.
  • You will be paid by direct deposit with a void cheque provided.

Location:

  • Remote or Sudbury, ON.
