Job description

Alberta Conservation Association (ACA) is looking for a highly motivated, team-oriented professional to join our team. Your strong interpersonal skills will help you succeed with a diverse team of wildlife professionals. This is a fulltime, permanent position based out of our South Regional Office in Lethbridge.

Responsibilities And Requirements

You will work within a team environment primarily on wildlife projects in southern Alberta. You ideally come with a background that includes work with animal movement data and be experienced with the day-to-day management of datasets. You ideally will have experience with all or some of the following including designing, trouble shooting and amending databases, programming satellite/GPS collars, day to day movement monitoring, interpreting location data to identify key activities (ungulates, Galliformes). You will be involved with a wide variety of activities including assisting with animal capture events, mortality recoveries, mapping, logistics planning, and landowner contacts. You are comfortable with GIS platforms and can readily undertake mapping tasks. The ideal candidate will have a solid statistical background and have worked with survival and or movement data.

To be successful you need strong organization and data management skills. You will also have experience with ArcGis and Microsoft Office and be able to develop controls to help verify and manage large data sets. Long field days may be required including periodic stays at field camps for portions of the year. The role is tasked at an intermediate level although candidates with senior level experience may qualify at the Senior Biologist level.

Qualifications

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in ecology or similar, although advanced degree is highly desirable
  • Minimum 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence (supply driver abstract prior to start date)
  • Proven ability to work with and troubleshoot large datasets
  • Ability to develop and execute report writing tasks in a timely manner
  • Self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proficiency maintaining professional partnerships
  • Detail oriented with solid organization and time management skills
  • Excellent computer knowledge and proficient using various Microsoft programs (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and GIS (ArcGIS platforms))

Additional Skills Considered Assets

  • Demonstrated ability to secure grants and funding
  • Comfort and desire to present material to diverse audiences including peers and scientific conferences, as well as the public
  • Experience with research projects focused on ecological questions, preferably ungulates or Galliformes
  • Experience with collaborating with other conservation organizations
  • Background with hunting, angling, and other rural pursuits
  • Experience operating a variety of field equipment (ATV, snow machines, 4X4 vehicles, trailers)
