Intermediate Claims Examiner (Commercial Property & Casualty Insurance)
CURIE (Canadian Universities Reciprocal Insurance Exchange) located in Burlington, Ontario is seeking a full-time Intermediate Claims Examiner to join our team on a permanent basis. As the Intermediate Claims Examiner, you will provide our members with a broad and diverse set of fundamental activities in principal areas of support to the claims department.
The ideal candidate is an organized, detail-oriented, self-starter who can manage multiple projects with accuracy and has a willingness to learn new skills. The chosen candidate will report directly to the Head of Claims.
Key Responsibilities:
Claims Examiner
- Examine Liability and Property Claims, which include bodily injury and property damage losses. Losses may include occupiers’ liability, medical malpractice, sports injuries, veterinarian malpractice, educational malpractice, fiduciary liability, benefits malpractice, defamation, host liquor liability and various property issues.
- Review new claims intakes and statements of claim to determine applicable coverage.
- Confirm the nature and validity of new claims, including the determination of potential exposures and assigning appropriate independent adjusters or legal counsel.
- Direct and monitor independent adjusters and legal counsel on investigation of files.
- Evaluate the nature of the loss and determine appropriate coverage.
- Ensure file is reserved accurately.
- Examine and assess the scope of liability and damages.
- Review payment requests thoroughly and process payments.
- Attend mediations and pre-trials on claim files when required.
- Handle deductible recovery claims (liability claims) and subrogation on property claims.
- Maintain file reserves in Optic Risk Claims system.
- Handle claims in accordance with the Claim Policies and Procedures Guidelines Manual.
Claims Risk Management
- Assist in putting together bulletins and webinars on behalf of the Risk advisory board.
- Participate in quarterly debrief meetings with the loss control team.
- Participate in large loss “postmortem” reviews with Risk Management, Underwriting Department, and subscriber.
- Assist in CURIE Quarterly Newsletter.
Claims Operations
- Monitor intake of new claims and set them up in the Optic Risk Claim system.
- Assist auditors on claims related requests.
- Assist Head of Claims on quarterly claims board reports.
- Assist with monthly reconciliation report balance between claims and accounting systems.
- Analyze claim trends and prepare reports as directed by the Head of Claims.
- Analyze property excess claims, prepare reports, and organize quarterly market calls.
- Assist the claims department with input of payments and deductible recoveries.
Requirements:
- Appropriate university or college general arts and/or business degree/diploma with minimum of 3-8 years+ of commercial property and casualty claims adjusting or examining experience. CIP, FCIP, CRM or RF designation or working towards any will be a significant asset.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, with a particular emphasis on Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Exceptionally organized and able to meet deadlines, willing to demonstrate initiative and excellent time management skills.
- Knowledge of insurance principles and practices.
- Excellent verbal, written, and oral communication skills.
