Job description

Interim, Product Design Manager, X-Series (1 year fixed term)

Hi there! Thanks for stopping by.

We’re looking for a Product Design Manager to join our (X-Series) Retail team in North America for a 1 year fixed-term contract. In this role, you will ensure your product design team delivers user experiences that retailers will find useful and love to use across their streams, while growing the team in their professional competence. You will also be responsible for researching, designing and prototyping user experiences for your own product stream.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Problem Solving: Understand business objectives to solve highly abstract problems and uncover unidentified ones. Connect and lead teams in executing solutions end-to-end. Apply strategic thinking not just in execution but to shape how teams approach new problems.
  • Driving User-Centricity: Make and communicate comprehensive design strategies based on quantitative and qualitative data and work in partnership with product managers to lead the problem definition. Facilitate journey mapping and mental model exercises.
  • Embedding Systems Thinking: Develop a masterful understanding of design system principles (and the current state of design within the industry) within your team. Lead a team in defining discovery components and evolving and elevating the design system.
  • Prototyping: Create prototypes or support the team to do so. Develop an excellent understanding of the current tooling within the team, and provide guidance to other designers on technical capabilities and constraints.
  • Coaching and Management: Oversee the completion of projects, establish processes to improve efficiency, nurture key relationships within the company, and provide mentorship to your team. Supervise contributors on projects and manage the workload and backlog across the team. Ensure that each designer in your team has a plan to grow and meet their potential and support them in the challenges they face.

You may be asked to contribute as part of the wider Lightspeed team to achieve organizational objectives.

What you need to bring:

  • A design-thinking education (Bachelor of Design, or Visual Arts, or Architecture, or Industrial Design, or Communication).
  • 1-2 years of industry experience in a people management role on a Design team, experience in matrix organizations a plus.
  • An acute self-awareness and deep empathy - for both the customer and your team’s goals.
  • A tenured, evolutionary perspective on technology, product, and design practices.
  • Applied experience with service design practices and a practice of constantly evolving your design process.
  • An appetite (and the skill) for working across all digital and physical manifestations of what we design.
  • A passion for mentoring executives, product managers, and engineers to deliver user-centered solutions.
  • Excellent communication and data visualization skills. You can bring internal stakeholders on your design journey and support your decisions with focus and brevity.
  • A deep curiosity and ability to consider product strategy and vision.
  • Expertise in Figma, understanding of Storybook.

The tools you will use in our team are: Figma Enterprise, Miro and familiarity with UXR tooling (ie: Usertesting, Dovetail, Maze, Fullstory).

We know that people are more than what’s on their CV. If you’re unsure that you have the right profile for the role, hit the ‘Apply’ button and give it a try!

What’s in it for you?:

  • Ability to do your job in a truly flexible environment.
