In April 2024, the Boards of St. Mary’s General and Grand River Hospitals both independently voted in favour of a voluntary merger of the Hospitals to form a new hospital organization. This evolution of our partnership will occur alongside our joint redevelopment work, as we strive to build a new acute care campus in the community. As Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital build the “Future of Care” together and a unified new hospital starting in April 2025, we are looking to recruit the Integrated Director, Financial Services & Deputy CFO that will enable the success of a new hospital that delivers innovative care to Ontario’s fastest growing region.

How Integrated Director, Financial Services & Deputy CFO support our teams:

Reporting to the Integrated VP Finance & Support Services (CFO), the Director Financial Services & Deputy CFO plans, organizes and directs the activities of the Financial Accounting, Treasury and Payroll functions of the hospital. The holder of the position is expected to be tactical and strategic to achieve favourable outcomes in financial functions, which include but are not limited to supporting: regular internal Management and Board financial reporting and related regulatory compliance, transactional processing (in Accounts Payable, Patient Accounts and Payroll services), maintenance of internal controls, external audit support, employee pension plan reporting compliance, cash and debt management and any external funding source reporting requirements.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Monthly Management financial statements, department cost centre reports (including variance analysis, forecasting and mitigation) and SLT Scorecard updates
  • Act as a financial resource for Board Committees
  • Annual external audit support
  • Financial internal control oversight including financial information systems and account reconciliations
  • Financial policies and procedure development
  • MOH and other funding sources financial reporting support (including MIS and BPSAA reporting)
  • Employee pension plan regulatory compliance support
  • Banker relations and cash management functions (including ST Investments and Debt Management)
  • Transactional processing in Accounts Payable, Patient Accounts and Payroll Services
  • Regular MOH and other funding letter agreement support (signing notes and follow-up reporting)
  • Human resource related functions in department (recruitment, performance goal/objectives/reviews, disciplinary, succession planning, staff education, etc.)
  • Departmental goal setting in alignment with organizational Strategic Directions and VP Finance & Support Services (CFO) goals and objectives
  • Provide full backup to maintain continuity of service for the VP Finance & Support Services (CFO) in their absence

The Integrated Director, Financial Services & Deputy CFO brings the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Business Administration, Accounting or equivalent
  • CPA designation required
  • OHRS MIS guidelines & Ontario Hospital Funding Formula training considered an asset
  • Minimum 3 years Director Finance experience at smaller hospital/healthcare institution; or, 5 years Manager or Finance experience at similar sized or larger hospital/healthcare institution
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding working through a merger of two organizations is considered a strong asset
  • Understanding of major capital project accounting reporting, and experience with negotiation of operating funding associated capital project development (i.e. Post Construction Operating Plan, or “PCOP”) is a strong asset
  • Strong business acumen with solid experience in business management, financial planning, performance measurement and budgeting functions
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to identify trends, establish benchmarks, as well as provide credible analysis and business recommendations
  • High emotional intelligence with excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex financial issues to a broad audience
  • Ability to work and thrive in a changing environment while experiencing financial constraints
  • Evidence of a collaborative leadership style with effective team building skills
  • Excellent decision making skills with the ability to form and defend independent judgment with the ability to influence others and outcomes
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to effectively handle a large number of issues simultaneously
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure/stressful conditions
  • Must be change orientated and possess an attitude of continuous improvement
