Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.
Position Overview
Under the general direction of the Program Director, and working within the Mission, Values and Management Philosophy of Shared Health and the Infection Prevention and Control Program, the Infection Control Assistant is responsible to:
- Assists with performing total chart audits, preparing, analyzing and reporting infection rates.
- Assists with identifying, flagging and maintaining the site Infection Prevention and Control data system(s) to ensure an accurate and current database is available for management of identified patients with specific communicable diseases.
- Develops, organizes and analyzes specific clinical, demographic and administrative data for site Infection Prevention and Control staff.
- Assists with designing computer databases for IP&C studies with given criteria within the scope of the software utilized.
- Assists with retrieving, entering, analyzing, and interpreting data, in computerized statistical and graphical reports.
- Generates additional reports as necessary.
- Maintains data collection tools and ensures confidentiality of the information contained within systems is utilized.
- Contributes input into and ideas for IP&C policies, procedures, operational directives, and other guidance documents.
- Assists with outbreak management. Initiates and coordinates projects as directed from beginning through to completion.
- Reports trends of concern to IP&C as necessary.
Experience
- Demonstrated experience with data retrieval, entry, analysis and interpretation.
- Experience conducting retrospective and prospective audits, ICD10 coding, and abstracting health information.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
- Successful completion of post-secondary education, including an Infection Control Practitioner course is required.
- Additional education in the areas of epidemiology, statistics or health care related fields required.
- Knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C), Microbiology, Epidemiology and Statistics required.
- Medical records audit and research training required.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
- Membership in Infection Prevention and Control Canada (IPAC) Canada and IPAC Manitoba encouraged.
Qualifications and Skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of PC/Windows operating systems required.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Access, Excel, Power Point and Outlook required.
- Demonstrated ability to use computer technologies to capture, manage and analyze data and to report and present data.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain consistently high levels of data accuracy.
- Ability to interact with a variety of disciplines.
- Demonstrated knowledge and application of surveillance definitions.
Physical Requirements
- Extended periods of time sitting at a PC/VDT.
- Extended periods of standing and walking during data collection on patient care units.
