Our Chalk River location is looking for a term Industrial Hygiene Technologist to support our Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Quality Science and Technology Support Branch (HSSE&Q S&T). What will you be doing!
As a member of the HSSE&Q S&T team, job duties and responsibilities include hazard identification, evaluation, reporting and recommending appropriate controls in the following key areas:
- Laser Safety
- Performing laser safety hazard assessments for lasers in S&T facilities to ensure safe operations.
- Developing a laser inventory and master list of S&T owned lasers and maintain database to ensure its accuracy.
- Performing the registration of lasers with the appropriate jurisdictional authorities for new lasers or when modifications and changes in existing lasers require updating the registry.
- Ensuring baseline health screening and periodic health checks are performed as required by the program.
- Laboratory Biosafety
- Assisting in the development and implementation of an R&D Laboratory Biosafety Program.
- Assisting in the designation of a Laboratory Biosafety Officer where required by legislation or CNL specific biosafety program.
- Performing laboratory biosafety field assessments and work with Line Management to implement the necessary controls as required.
- CNL WHMIS Program and Chemical Management
- Assisting with WHMIS 2015 compliance in S&T facilities.
- Assisting S&T lab supervisors and management in CNL WHMIS Part 2 workplace specific training.
- Assisting in the maintenance of the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Chemical Inventory database.
- Assisting with field implementation, training and maintaining of CNL’s new chemical management system.
- Requesting and inputting annual Chemical Inventory updates.
- Assisting facilities with obtaining SDS for new products.
- Confined Space
- Assisting with updating and maintaining the master list of CRL Confined Spaces.
- Providing Facilities support with the identification, completion and updating of Initial Hazard Assessments in S&T Facilities and to support S&T project execution.
- Verifying daily confined space pre-entry atmospheric survey and hazard verification.
- Instrumenting maintenance and operation (sensor replacement, bump-testing, calibration).
- CRL Hearing Conservation Program
- Assessing potential noise hazards and employee exposure using personal dosimetry and sound pressure level measurements.
- Providing line managers with survey reports indicating the results, field observations and recommendations (control measures, personal protective equipment (PPE) and medical surveillance if relevant).
- Assisting with updating and maintaining the CRL Noise database.
- Providing reports as requested by the Industrial Hygienist or Medical staff.
- Instrumenting maintenance and operation.
- CRL Asbestos Program
- Assisting with updating and maintaining the CRL Asbestos Inventory database.
- Providing support to site facilities for the identification and classification for the removal of asbestos containing materials.
- Work Permit authorization.
- Bulk identification sampling and analysis utilizing Polarized Light Microscopy.
- Airborne fiber sampling and analysis utilizing Phase Contrast Microscopy.
- Other Job Duties Include
- Ensuring surveys comply with the relevant analytical and interpretation documentation.
- Operating and maintenance of personal air sampling pumps with various sampling media for the analysis of airborne fibers, dust, fumes, organic vapors.
- Operating, maintenance and interpretation of direct reading monitors (oxygen, hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, chlorine, ozone, combustibles, general monitor (>100 vapors and gases)).
- Assessing and analysis of non-ionizing radiation (UV, visible light, RF/microwave, EMF, laser power meter).
- Heat stress measurements (WBGT measurements for the implementation of work/rest regime).
- Anemometers for the study of air flow (fume hoods and spray booths).
- Mercury vapour sniffer, mercury vacuum.
- Indoor Air Quality investigating (temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, TVOC, mould sampling and result interpretation).
- Breathing Air header surveys (direct reading instruments and analytical techniques).
- Analytical analysis of field samples (Atomic Absorption, Gas Chromatograph, Infrared Spectrophotometer, Microscopy, Gravimetric).
- Other relevant duties required to support the Industrial Hygiene Program.
- May be assigned by management to a specific line organization or project.
What we are looking for:
- Education
- Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology in a field relevant to the position, such as a Diploma in Industrial Hygiene (IH) or Occupational Safety & Health (OSH), or equivalent formal education. OR Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and normally has more than 3 years pertinent experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
- Experience
- Mechanical aptitude to operate, maintain and diagnose problems of sampling and analytical equipment; technical aptitude to follow procedures and interpret test results.
- Heavy workload requires knowledge of Industrial Hygiene principles, on a wide range of hazardous substances and skills on the use of a variety of sampling and analytical instruments.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Demonstrates “safety as a value” attitude. Ensures activities are conducted with CNL, public and employee safety foremost in mind. Uses event free tools as part of routine operations.
- Possesses initiative and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Possesses a strong background in Organic and Inorganic chemistry.
- Ability to become a technical specialist on Industrial Hygiene issues.
- Demonstrates interpersonal and communication skills (active listening, oral expression/comprehension; written expression/comprehension).
- Performs physical and mental tasks.
- Mechanical manipulative ability is essential. Must have mechanical aptitude to operate and diagnose problems of equipment for sampling and analytical instrumentation.
- Technical aptitude to follow procedures and interpret test results.
- Near vision, ability to see details at close range.
- Strong short-term memory, ability to remember what is/has happened and record events accordingly.
- Coordination and planning of daily activities.
- Able to meet Technical Union’s qualifications for membership.
- General knowledge of CNL programs and procedures, particularly those concerning safety.
- Will be required to take CNL Radiation Protection Group 3 training and pass respirator training and fit testing.
- Knowledge of ESDC regulations, Industrial Hygiene Program requirements, procedures, and operating instructions and the CNL OHS Manual and Procedures.
- Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
- Security Clearance Eligibility Required
- Level 2 Secret with SASC requires a minimum of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
Working Conditions:
- Steady heavy workload that requires good inter-personal and mechanical skills, knowledge of the Industrial Hygiene Program requirements.
- Able to be physically active (standing, walking) for up to 7.5 hrs a day. Able to manage stairs, ladders and other egress equipment to enter all site and building areas. Able to use personal protective equipment including a respirator.
- Must be able to use personal protective equipment.
- The major portion of the workday will be in the lab or in the field. In order to do this Industrial Hygiene Technologist must be:
- Physically fit and able to stay on their feet for long periods of time.
- Able to handle lifting of equipment and move to transport pick-up points.
- Able to handle the dirt, grease and unpleasant smells that can be associated with industrial and construction work areas.
- The employee is required to follow all safety rules in their particular work area(s). The employee must be familiar with emergency signals and procedures. The employee is responsible to learn and follow all safety procedures and processes that are associated with the position. Work will require RP group 3 training and capabilities. Duties will require the use of monitoring machines for entry and exit of the buildings and laboratories.
