GENERAL FUNCTION

The Canadian Indirect Tax Manager's primary focus will be in the area of Canadian Sales (GST/HST, QST and PST) and other Indirect taxes.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage Indirect Tax functions, including:
    • Oversee monthly GST/HST, QST, and PST returns preparation and month-end closing activities.
    • Perform product taxability research and ad-hoc projects.
    • Identify tax legislative and administrative changes that may impact business activities and procedures.
    • Perform tax recovery reviews.
    • Perform monthly accounting reconciliations and post journal entries.
  • Manage Sales Tax (GST/HST, QST, and PST) audits:
    • Respond to information requests and general communication with taxing authorities.
    • Manage and assist in data collection.
    • Collect information from internal and external sources as needed.
    • Manage audit cycle and update management regularly.
  • Assist with tax planning related to amalgamation of Canadian legal entities.
  • Work closely with Canadian Income Tax manager:
    • Ensure income vs sales amount reconcile.
    • Align to communicate consistent reporting amounts and business activities with taxing authorities.
    • Assist with any tax-related requests.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline tax compliance processes, creating efficiencies through increased standardization and automation.
  • Identify opportunities to minimize audit risks by creating efficiencies to manage audits and consistent reporting to avoid being audited.
  • Provide input to direct staff and other subordinates within Tax and other business units.
  • Understand the business processes, identify new pain points, and recommend and implement solutions within assigned responsibilities.
  • Communicate and recommend strategy and required planning for assigned area.
  • Understand drivers of team members' behaviors and coach to assist in defining career paths.
  • Develop and prioritize performance objectives for self and direct reports and assess performance accordingly.
  • Establish individual credibility which is critical in driving strategy, priorities, direction, and vision.
  • Deliver effective presentations on both data and controversial topics; begin to influence those outside the organization.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, CPA preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in public accounting or private industry.
  • Knowledge of Canadian sales tax laws.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and self-management skills.
  • Must speak French and English.
  • Excellent research and writing skills.
  • Ability to develop and sustain relationships - internal and with taxing authorities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Software Skills Preferred: MS Suite, SAP, Oracle, Adobe, Hyperion, Alteryx.
