Your Opportunity
The Indigenous Teaching & Learning Advisoris a non-instructional faculty position, created in consultation with local Indigenous communities, that walks alongside the Director of Indigenous Relations & Reconciliation to ensure teaching and learning services and supports are designed and shared in a good way. The position provides leadership across the College, with an open heart and open mind, to provide guidance and support on Indigenous ways of knowing and being for the purposes of facilitation, programming, curriculum, and resource development, and enhances teaching and learning practices to support in-person, online, and land-based learning.The position reports directly to the Dean of Teaching & Learning Innovations and is a member of the Teaching and Learning Innovations Portfolio.
In partnership with local Indigenous communities and Elders, and in collaboration with Indigenous Student Services, Academic Portfolios, Applied Research, the Indigenous Teaching and Learning Advisor shares and incorporates Indigenous learning and teaching principles into everyday activities and processes at the College. The Advisor cultivates pedagogical and curricular practices that advance Indigenous initiatives and address differences in social identities and classroom social structures such as the impacts of race, ethnicity, ancestry, gender, sexuality, ability, class, and religion on classroom dynamics, and how these dynamics affect the ability to engage in teaching and learning processes.
The Advisor brings an Indigenous and holistic lens to teaching and learning practices throughout academic portfolios and other areas of the College. This work may include bringing an Indigenous perspective to the development of curriculum and learning resources, developing wise practices related to teaching and learning, professional ethics, and growing competencies surrounding the provision of curriculum development, pedagogy, assessment practices, culturally responsive instruction, and the creation of learning resources.
The incumbent contributes to college-wide plans to support Indigenous learners and communities, including Indigenization plans, initiatives and activities that include building and developing relationships with local Indigenous communities, Knowledge Keepers, and Elders. The Advisor may also provide guidance to librarians and the area of Applied Research, sharing Indigenous Knowledge and highlighting Indigenous ways of being and doing in their practices. Professional development, service activities, and scholarly activity are also supported.
The Indigenous Teaching & Learning Advisor walks alongside others at the College to identify and coordinate culturally based programming and ceremonies for the College community. The nature and scope of responsibilities for this position may change as the College continues a journey of reconciliation.

Functions and Duties
  • Provides leadership on strategies, initiatives, and activities that promote Indigenous ways of knowing, teaching, and being in the context of Learning, Teaching, and Libraries, by integrating critically informed approaches and Indigenous ways of knowing and teaching into learner-centred curriculum, through curriculum development and assessment practices, bringing an Indigenous lens to shaping learner-centred curricula, training, and workshops.
  • Develops and sustains relationships with local Indigenous communities, Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers, educators, and community members who contribute to guiding education practices and strategies that respect Indigenous Knowledge and value systems, ensuring Indigenous People and communities feel welcomed, supported, and respected in ways that are consistent with community and cultural protocols.
  • Implements a variety of Indigenous teaching and delivery methods that foster a positive learning environment, accommodate learner needs, prioritize trauma-informed approaches, and promote learner engagement in teaching and learning practices.
  • Provides strategic perspective and leadership in relation to protecting and promoting engagement with Indigenous Knowledges, and ways that align with principles and practices that respect local land-based protocols, including consulting with Indigenous communities, Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers, faculty and instructors, employees, and community members, to develop, implement, and assess Indigenous Initiatives, programs, and resources, as partners in decolonization and reconciliation efforts.
  • Walks alongside academic and support departments, including Indigenous Student Services and the Teaching & Learning Innovations portfolio, to enhance the value of learning and teaching, and to develop experiential learning opportunities for students that supports respectful engagement with Indigenous information topics and practices, ensuring course curricula are reflective of Indigenous ways of knowing and being.
  • Facilitates learning opportunities for college staff and community partners to develop cultural competencies, particularly with respect to delivering instruction, and engaging students and employees in respectful dialogue related to First Nations Principles of Learning and culturally informed teaching practices, to expand campus-wide education initiatives.
  • Supports the delivery of accredited and nonaccredited course instruction, trainings, and workshops by providing input on Indigenous student well-being and considers the different geographical locations and racial identities of learners, to create inclusive learning experiences and environments for all students.
  • Collaborates and builds relationships with Indigenous students, the Indigenous Services department, and with other internal and external individuals and organizations, on projects and initiatives that help advance the College’s Indigenization plans and initiatives.
  • Collects, designs, and shares resources that support teaching and learning with Indigenous communities.
  • Connects and engages with professional, personal, and collegial networks to inform and shape practices.
  • Prepares and delivers in-class instruction to students, in conjunction with faculty and instructors.
  • Engages in professional development activity intended to promote subject area and technical competence.
  • Engages in service activities such as College-wide committees, events, and other initiatives, that support the College and/or the profession and/or the community.
  • Works with employees across the College to challenge traditional assumptions and approaches to delivering post-secondary education, that better support Indigenous learners and educators.
  • If requested and approved, may engage in scholarly activity, which may include scholarship, research and creative activity.
  • Travel between OC campuses and within the College region may be required.

Education and Experience
Minimum qualification is a Graduate degree or higher with experience in professional practice related to the position. A background in education or teaching is considered an asset.
A minimum of three years’ experience coordinating Indigenous initiatives in a post-secondary, library, or educational organization is preferred.
Experience in planning and coordinating projects, instruction, or educational activities for a wide range of students, researchers, and/or educators.
Familiarity with practices and efforts to bring Indigenous perspectives to education and curriculum.
Experience developing relationships and working with Indigenous Peoples, Elders, and communities.
Familiarity with Indigenous research and information resources is considered an asset.
Familiarity with local Indigenous communities, organizations, and leadership in the context of the Okanagan and/or British Columbia.

  • Knowledge and awareness of Indigenous issues, communities, values, traditions, and cultural norms.
  • Demonstrate contextual knowledge, understanding of, and experience with Indigenous scholarship and Indigenous People’s histories and cultures in what is now called Canada.
  • Demonstrate detailed understanding of the systemic issues and barriers Indigenous students encounter when trying to pursue and complete a post-secondary education.
  • Ability to develop and maintain reciprocal relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, and/or leadership in a professional or academic context.
  • Ability to facilitate and lead productive conversations around social justice, equity, learning design, assessment of learning, program and course evaluations, and related topics.
  • Demonstrate a collaborative and team-based approach of leading and supporting others.
  • Communicate effectively, particularly across groups of individuals, including students, staff, administrators, and external community partners, with varying levels of knowledge and cultural competencies.
  • Facilitation and instruction skills with an ability to problem solve and manage group dynamics and conflict resolution.
  • Knowledge of nsyilxcən and/or Secwepemctsín language is an asset.

Annual Salary/Hourly Rate
Salary range $71,846 to $115,129 with normal starting salary between $78,872 and $85,897 annually, dependent on relevant education and experience.
