Job description

The staff attorney will train and mentor pro bono attorneys representing clients in immigration matters and maintain a small in-house caseload of immigration cases with unique and challenging issues, helping us stay at the forefront of immigration practice. The candidate will ideally be able to work both individually and in a close-knit team, have strong organizational skills and/or experience coordinating programs, and be comfortable interacting with both our clients as well as lawyers at major law firms.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform client intake, provide advice and counsel to clients, and assess cases for pro bono placement through consultations with clients
  • Mentor and support volunteer attorneys who are handling immigration cases for Her Justice referred clients
  • Maintain a small caseload of immigration matters to help survivors of domestic violence and their derivative family members obtain lawful immigration status
  • Work with the immigration team to develop and strengthen existing Her Justice immigration practice
  • Work with the immigration team to develop new forms of connecting pro bono attorneys to immigration matters, such as creating immigration clinics and identifying additional immigration remedies relevant to Her Justice target populations
  • Recruit and train volunteer attorneys from large law firms to provide pro bono representation to Her Justice referred clients by conducting CLE training, and presenting on issues of immigration law
  • Manage and coordinate legal clinics with partnering law firms
  • Assist in recruiting, training, and supervising in-house volunteers and law students
  • Assist with preparing grant proposals and reports
  • Serve as a resource to non-immigration staff on immigration-related matters
  • Participate in community outreach, media relations, and other forms of marketing and public education
  • Present at board meetings and serve on committees and panels relating to immigration policy issues and/or reform efforts
  • Participate in the development and implementation of Her Justice policy initiatives related to immigration law

Qualifications:

  • JD degree and bar admission in any state is required
  • Fluency in Spanish, written and oral, is required. Candidates who are not fluent in Spanish will not be considered
  • At least 3-5 years of experience handling immigration cases for survivors of domestic violence is required
  • Computer proficiency, including knowledge of the Microsoft Suite, is required
  • Familiarity with family law, matrimonial law, public benefits, criminal law, and/or housing issues is a plus
