Job Summary:

Reporting to the Manager of Labour Relations and Human Resources, the HR Business Partner (HRBP) will serve as a strategic partner to management and employees. This role emphasizes labour relations, union interactions, workplace investigations, and managing HR functions across Canada and the US. The HRBP must deeply understand employment laws in both regions and handle complex employee relations issues. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Labour Relations, with exceptional relationship-building, coordination, and problem-solving skills. Partnering with business leaders and the HR team, the HRBP will implement people solutions that support business strategies and align with corporate HR objectives. Occasional travel to various sites is required.

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Partner with client group leaders, leveraging strong knowledge of collective agreements, employment terms, relevant legislation, while outlining risks to provide the essential advice.
  2. Work with union representatives to manage and resolve labour relations issues, including handling grievances, conducting mediation sessions, and participating in arbitration processes to ensure fair and equitable outcomes.
  3. Partner with client group leaders to foster a productive and engaged workplace, enhancing customer satisfaction and shareholder value.
  4. Conduct thorough and objective investigations into employee complaints, document findings, recommend actions, and ensure confidentiality and sensitivity throughout the process.
  5. Guide leaders in developing and maintaining proactive employee and labour relations by identifying and analyzing issues, challenges, opportunities, and risks to support business needs and corporate initiatives.
  6. Assist with learning and development, performance management, employee engagement, and other HR initiatives.
  7. Prepare and lead training sessions and presentations delivered to clients on various HR topics.
  8. Lead or participate in project teams integral to business and people strategies, providing technical expertise in planning, design, and implementation.
  9. Ensure adherence to legislative and regulatory policies, procedures, and standards.
  10. Visit various company locations across Canada and the US, including remote sites as required.
  11. Provide full-cycle recruiting services for client groups as required.

Position Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's Degree in HR, Business Administration, or a related field.
  2. 5+ years as an HR Generalist with full cycle HR exposure, emphasizing labour relations.
  3. Combination of education and experience may be considered.
  4. Strong knowledge of Canadian and US employment laws.
  5. Excellent communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  6. Discretion in handling sensitive information.
  7. Preferred HR certification (e.g., CPHR, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP).
  8. Class 5 Operator's License with a satisfactory 5-year driving record.
  9. Advisory experience in a unionized environment, including collective agreement interpretation, grievance handling, and layoff and recall procedures.
  10. Managing HR functions across multiple provinces and states.
  11. Strong facilitation, conflict resolution, and investigation skills.
  12. Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  13. Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  14. Some travel, including to remote sites, required.
  15. Workforce planning experience is an asset.
  16. Experience creating and facilitating training programs is an asset.
  17. Proficiency in Oracle and SharePoint is an asset.
  18. Understanding of workforce and recruiting trends in Ontario, Quebec, and/or the US is an asset.
  19. French fluency is an asset.
