The HSE Manager plays an integral role in providing leadership and expertise in promoting health, safety, and well-being of workers. You will play an essential part in creating a safe, compliant, and sustainable workplace through identifying, developing, implementing, monitoring, and continuously improving Health and Safety Programs. You have a passion for delivering excellence in all areas of HSE and can demonstrate the effectiveness of HSE programs through communicating learnings as well as analyzing and providing statistical HSE data to Senior Leadership and relevant stakeholders as required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensures compliance with company policies, and OH&S legislation.
- Stays up to date with all relevant OHS legislation to implement change or update work practices proactively as needed.
- Trains employees on best practices that will ensure safety while carrying out day to day work schedules.
- Assists with the onboarding process by conducting safety orientation for all new hires.
- Spends time in the field auditing and inspecting work sites, providing mentoring to workers and supervisors.
- Assist supervisors and workers with Health and Safety concerns and hazard identification.
- Build site specific and project specific HSE plans and Emergency Response Plans to support activities being conducted.
- Collaborate with and consult management team on short and long-term strategies and play an active role in the continuous improvement efforts of the OHS management system.
- Lead comprehensive incident investigations, establish root causes, draft incident reports, and implement effective corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Ensure incident reporting guidelines are followed.
- Update Health and Safety manual, codes of practice, safe work practices and procedures, and critical tasks analysis documentation.
- Enter data required for industry electronic safety programs.
- Attend industry Health & Safety seminars, conferences, and professional development opportunities when requested.
- Carries out duties that may be required by senior management.
Education & Training:
- Diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) or a related field.
- NCSO certification preferred.
- Standard First Aid certification is mandatory.
- CRSP – or working towards, considered an asset.
- Excellent computer skills and demonstrated experience in database management and record keeping.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel at an intermediate level.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (current abstract must be provided).
Experience:
- Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in an intermediate OHS role.
- Previous experience in a mining and/or manufacturing environment is considered an asset.

- Must be physically and mentally fit with the ability to safely drive in mining atmospheres alone.

- Advanced knowledge of OH&S regulations.
- Intermediate proficiency in MS Office suite of programs.
- Demonstrated skills in establishing and maintaining positive relationships with internal/external individuals.
- Effective time management and very organized.
- Demonstrate high standards of ethics and maintain highly confidential information.
Working Conditions:
- Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
- While performing this job the employee could be frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and outside weather conditions (wet, hot, cold, dust, wind) when out in the field.
- Requires data input for extended periods of time without leaving the work area.
- Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, and other office equipment.
- Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports.
- Requires mobility sufficient to travel; some travel to other transloads will be required.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.
- Must be able to talk and hear audible sounds and voices.
- Must be able to frequently walk, use hands and fingers, handle objects, and feel and reach with hands and arms.
- This is a safety sensitive position. The candidate in this role must be able to pass a functional fit test as well as a drug and alcohol test.
- Vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
