Job description

Millennium EMS Solutions Ltd. (MEMS) is committed to implementing and maintaining a vigorous Health, Safety & Environment Program (HSE Program). The strategic duties of this position include tactical planning, implementing safety objectives that integrate into MEMS business plans, assisting in the development of programs such as Behaviour Based Safety, employee engagement activities in safety and the overall development of a safety-conscious culture. This is primarily a field-based position, there will be a requirement to travel between MEMS offices and to MEMS work sites (approximately 70% of the time).

Job Purpose:

As an Intermediate HSE Advisor, you are part of our Project Services group supporting the health and safety department and equipment center and you will be responsible for:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Promote a safety culture where health and safety is a priority that must never be compromised.
  • Coach and guide employees on MEMS HSE management system, health and safety programs, processes, and OHS legislation. This includes providing onsite field presence to provide constructive feedback through coaching and mentoring.
  • Collaborate with MEMS employees to anticipate, identify, evaluate and determine practical solutions to health and safety risks and issues.
  • Manage the identification of health and safety training needs for all employees within the organization, including delivering health and safety presentations and training.
  • Assist with the development and review of HSE documents such as Project Mobilization Checklists, Pre-Job Safety Meetings, Prime Contractor documentation and Job Task Hazard Assessments.
  • Review and approve contractor’s safety management systems prior to work commencing.
  • Availability outside of office hours to take calls in regard to after-hours safety events.
  • Develop, review and/or approve site-specific safety plans and project specific work.
  • Conduct safety inspections in the field.
  • Conduct safety event investigations focused on prevention, root cause analysis and injury reduction.
  • Compile and maintain databases of leading and lagging indicators.
  • Support MEMS ergonomic program.
  • Assist in the progression of the MEMS safety program with a focus on prevention and continual improvement.
  • Execute health and safety projects/initiatives, as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Knowledge and Skills:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant occupational health and safety and workers’ compensation legislation, regulatory requirements, professional standards, and best practices.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of contractor’s roles and responsibilities on projects; including evaluation of contractors’ safety programs.
  • Exceptional and persuasive oral and written communication skills as well as experience presenting to large audiences is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to document processes, flow charts, and procedures.
  • Must have the strong desire and ability to work independently with minimal supervision, including excellent follow-through skills.
  • Strong computer skills with knowledge of Windows applications, including Word and Excel.
  • Proven experience in development and delivery of safety training.
  • Experience in Energy Safety Canada Auditing is an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and effective team player.
  • Detail oriented and exceptional creative thinking skills.
  • Highly motivated energetic individual.
  • Ability to successfully provide Health and Safety leadership to all aspects of our projects and operations.

What You Bring:

  • Relevant College Diploma or Certificate is required, preferably in Occupational Health and Safety related field. Completion of National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) is required. Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) is considered an asset.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in safety management preferably in a consulting environment.
  • Must be able to meet the requirements of site access as dictated by our clients, which may include pre-access drug, alcohol and fitness testing.
  • Possess a valid, non-GDL Class 5 Drivers license.

Working Conditions:

  • Field safety visits may include travel in adverse conditions.
  • Travel between offices required.
  • Office environment that requires sitting for extended periods of time, as well as field work.
  • Prolonged exposure to computer keyboards and computer screens.
  • Sometimes requires long hours of work. Occasional interruptions outside work hours and travel to other locations are required.
  • Ability to work varying shifts due to the 24 hour safety number.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Required to walk, stand, climb, bend forward, kneel down, crawl, reach and grasp, push and pull objects, lift and/or move up to 30 kg, sometimes over the shoulders, repetitive bending and lifting of items, along with repetitive arm movements.
