Hospitalist Physician (Two Positions)

The Department of Medicine and the Division of Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute is looking for two skilled Hospitalist Physicians to work with us to provide the best possible care for our patients.

The successful applicant would join a group of 42 cardiologists, and 3 other hospitalists, at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI). UOHI is a large tertiary centre providing cardiovascular care to Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. The University of Ottawa Heart Institute is Canada’s largest and foremost heart health centre. It employs over 1,400 physicians, nurses, researchers, technicians, allied health professionals and more. The Institute handles more than 235,000 patients yearly from across Canada.

The Division is renowned for delivery of outstanding cardiac care, excellence in education at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels (recognized as a leading training program in Canada and internationally) and recognized internationally for its research in particular in electrophysiology, cardiac imaging, STEMI/ACS coronary intervention, valvular disease, cardiac transplantation and pulmonary hypertension programs among others as well as strength in heart failure and structural interventions.

Hospitalists work 8 am-5 pm on the UOHI inpatient wards (not in the ICCU). There is NO ON-CALL and NO EXPECTATION OF WEEKEND OR EVENING COVERAGE. As a Hospitalist Physician at UOHI, you will round on patients daily along with the attending cardiologist (who is the MRP), and provide orders and advice to nursing staff regarding the ongoing care of these patients. Hospitalists provide direct care to patients with internal medicine conditions and manage and coordinate along with the MRP, care plans for patients.

Hospitalists are given the option to participate in quality improvement initiatives and other academic activities.

Candidates must have an MD degree from an accredited medical school. The successful candidate will possess or be eligible for an Ontario license, have very good interpersonal and clinical skills, and be committed to patient-centered care.

The successful candidate must be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of Lecturer or higher at the University of Ottawa within the Department of Medicine; be a member of or be eligible for membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association; and ideally, have experience teaching medical students and residents.

The UOHI, University of Ottawa, and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.

The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP) as well as honorariums/stipends.
