Job description

The Health and Safety Specialist will be responsible to maintain and enhance all health and safety programs. You will work closely with employees, supervisors, and managers to promote all initiatives associated with improving compliance in occupational health, safety, fleet, contracting, and Certificate of Recognition (COR).

Responsibilities

  1. Maintain the Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
  2. Conduct internal audits.
  3. Support programs to maintain COR.
  4. Organize and assist with safety meetings, safety talks, and monitoring compliance.
  5. Provide training and guidance to employees on safety practices, emergency procedures, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  6. Conduct site visits alongside site observations/audits.
  7. Create, maintain, and modify in-house training programs and participate in the spring/winter orientation programs.
  8. Maintain and update training records, as well as organize and conduct training, new worker orientation, and online training.
  9. Collect and input statistics.
  10. Create, maintain, and modify safe work practices, safe job procedures, and job hazard assessments.
  11. Investigate workplace incidents, prepare detailed investigation reports, and recommend corrective actions.
  12. Assist with the reporting of claims and return to work program.
  13. Collaborate with external agencies, including regulatory bodies and insurance providers, to address safety concerns and ensure compliance.
  14. Assist the Health and Safety Manager with Ministry of Labour site visits, investigating incidents, accidents, injuries, near misses, substandard actions/conditions, etc.
  15. Assist Co-chairs in the administration and facilitation of the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
Qualifications

  1. 5 years of experience as a Health and Safety Coordinator, or similar position.
  2. Familiar with the OHSA including Construction Projects Regulation, Industrial Regulation.
  3. Familiar with Mining Regulation would be an asset.
  4. Experience in the construction/industrial sector.
  5. Knowledge of WSIB reporting and return to work programs.
  6. Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite.
  7. Comfortable using health & safety software (familiarity with SiteDocs, ISN Portal, and WSIB website portal would be an asset).
  8. Great interpersonal skills.
  9. Strong communication skills.
  10. Comfortable presenting to groups.
  11. Exceptionally organized.
  12. Ability to demonstrate assertiveness when required.
  13. Class G driver’s license.
  14. Ability to drive to sites independently.
  15. Education: Certificate, diploma, or degree in Occupational Health and Safety would be an asset.
