Position Overview
Reporting to the Human Resources Manager, the Health & Safety Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring compliance with WITRON’s vision of Health and Safety by ensuring that the site is complying with all local, provincial, and federal Health and Safety regulations, policies, procedures, initiatives, and safe work practices. Ensure appropriate safety training, practices, policies, and procedures are in place to avoid preventable health and safety occurrences. The candidate will be able to enjoy a unique blend of both office and field work, as well as working both individually and as part of a team.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure compliance with all federal, provincial and local regulations and standards involving safety, industrial hygiene and general workplace and fire safety.
- Work closely with the National Health and Safety team to create and maintain safety policies, covering basic safety rules/regulations, accident investigation/evaluation and reporting procedures.
- Organize, facilitate and track Health and Safety training.
- Carry out inspections on a routine basis, identifying workplace hazards and embark on corrective and/or preventive measures.
- Correct unsafe work practices when required and monitor adherence to safety policies and/or guidelines.
- Organize, participate and facilitate accident investigation process and train leaders on process.
- Assist in the development and implementation of new documentation for continuous improvement of the Corporate Health and Safety Management System.
- Ensure inspection and maintenance of all safety equipment on site.
- Arrange, participate and document site mock emergency drills.
- Liaise with external agencies when necessary.
- Oversee the Joint Health & Safety Committee, as one of the Chairs.
- Together with Human Resources, support and participate with the safe return to work program.
- Maintain Safety Data Sheet library and ensure distribution and communication of new documentation.
- Create and facilitate weekly safety talks to ensure effectiveness of the internal responsibility system.
- Respond and investigate employee health and safety concerns.
- Order safety equipment and supplies as required and approved.
- Work with the Site Manager to identify system, program and training needs and ensure they are in line with legislative requirements.
- Assist with follow-up on audit recommendations to ensure all items have been completed on time and assist with removing any barriers to completion.
- Assist in the development of safe work processes for maintenance and operational functions with a focus on high-risk activities.
- Collection, analysis and distribution of health and safety KPI information.
- Compliance with all safety regulations of assigned tasks, and ensure a clean and safe working environment with active participation in the health and safety program.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, Risk Management or similar with a minimum of two years Health and Safety experience.
- At least 2 years of Health and Safety work experience.
- Working knowledge of Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Acts and Regulations.
- Attention to detail and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to interact and influence effectively.
- Ability to drive a strong safety philosophy and implement programs designed to effectively change behavior and prevent injury.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Joint Health and Safety Committee Certified, Part I and Part II.
- Familiarity with OHSA and regulations including Machine Guarding and Working at Height.
- Experienced in emergency response and able to maintain current first aid & CPR Certificate.
